Carbon-fiber wrapped barrels

Post by Timb0 » 25 Oct 2014, 6:35 am

There seems to be a lot of mixed opinions about carbon-fiber wrapped barrels and I have only seen one once in Australia.
Does anyone own one, have any experience with them, or knows someone who has and can comment on how they perform?

Give Andrew down at Magnum Sports in Sydney a call. I saw a couple in his shop a little while ago. I recon he'd be a good bloke to talk to about them
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

I would be more inclined to ask on USA forums . What worries me about the system is that heat and vibration may in time loosen the grip of the laminate .
For a special light weight application they may be ok but I read that if the steel barrel is turned too thin they warp on heating up so now they profile the barrels to a larger diameter that you could fire safely without the wrap so weight saving may be minimal . I don't think many shooters in Oz have tried one yet .
I can't see the point really as how do you clamp the barrel for removal without damaging the wrap.

I was looking at them a year or two ago and I spoke to a well respected gun smith about them. He said the only ones he had seen were when people wanted them changed out cause they didn't like them ( there was a hint of inaccuracy). He did specialise in precision rifles though and I was thinking more along the lines of a light hunting rifle. Anyway I pretty much wrote them off.
As Mecca said I have heard they are on some of the straight pull .22's so it sort of got me interested again. So I might take Mausermates advice and call Magnum sports. Thanks.

My son and i have 1 and they are great
top accuracy and do everything a stainless or molly will do.
christian arms brought some into australia and they where hopeless as my son found out and returned it for a full refund to importer.
We have custom 7mm Dakota rifles that shoot great and my sons has fired over 500 rounds down his tube with no worries.
They are benchmark barrels and ABS wrapping, and we would buy more tomorrow if we needed to as have been great.
If you type fallow 1077 in You Tube you will see how good they are for accuracy, My son shoots 2 fallow with carbon wrap barrelled 7mm Dakota. Make up your own minds on wrapped barrels but to us they are good as can be.

Perform?

What do they do other than look different if it's a wrap?

Yeh teedo, they aren't just carbon fibre wrapped on a conventional barrel, the barrel may only have a wall thickness of 2.5 to 3 mm or less, then it is wrapped in CFibre for strength, make for a very light alternative or moly or stainless

Ah I understand.
