Could I muck up floating my rifle barrel myself?

Post by roob » 07 Oct 2013, 2:01 pm

The barrel of my rifle touches the side of my stock near the tip so I'm looking to float it properly.

Looking at a few pics of people doing it, a piece of sand paper wrapped around a length of wood dowling looks to be the preferred method.

Not rocket science obviously to do this so I'm going to give it a go myself. Just wanted to check before I do if it's possible to go to far?

It's a regular stained walnut stock, so will need a coat of something. Other than that anything to be conscious off? I'm not going to weaken the stock or anything if I do something wrong am I?

Thanks all.

You'd be sawing away with your dowel for yonks before you went to far and damage anything.

You're only talking about taking about a mm or so out right?
Good news, everyone!

As long as you're only working above the recoil lug, no.

It's walnut, not butter. You're not going to slip and accidentally go all the way through it :P

Do a couple seconds back and forth and sit the action in it. Repeat until you've got an even gap all the way around the rifle barrel.

But the guy at the gun shop told me the butter stock was the best one to buy

When it melted in your boot on the way home, that was the sign you got shafted :P

Ah yes it's a tough choice what stock to buy.

American Walnut, Synthetic or Butter
See you on the firing line.
