Thumbhole stock worth it for replacement?

Post by Triang » 10 Oct 2013, 8:02 pm

G'day guys,

I've got an old Howa target rifle who's stock has been neglected for a few years... Really needs a replacement I reckon.

Standard grip at the moment, but while I've maybe got the op to replace it I can give something new a try.

What do we think of thumb hole stocks?

Any advantages that apply to most shooters? Or is it just a personal preference deal?

Seem plenty of pictures, but never wrapped my hand around one to get a feel for it.

Opinions?

Cheers.

Personal preference in my experience.

I've used comfortable pistol grips and uncomfortable thumb hole stocks, and vice versa.

Neither's better, one will just be better for you.

You picked the wrong sport if you wanted "cheap".

Try a soccer ball next time :P

A personal preference for sure , I put a Boyds laminated Thumbhole on my 223 Howa replacing the Houge
overmoulded rubber stock . My rifle gets used by four people pretty regularly and apart from the comments
about how it looked better with the thumbhole no -one really commented on it being better to shoot. I have
now changed back to the Houge because I think I shoot better with it. I also want to pillar and glass bed the
Boyds and give it another go later. Interesingly my Dad who reckons he could hardly lift it with the Houge
on , reckons it felt much lighter with the thumbhole and he would be able to shoot it. Its a stainless heavy
barrel so its pushing nearly 10 lbs

I can't quite make my mind up on them.

I've used a few, but feel a bit like I'm rotating my wrist too much or something.

I feel like they're missing some palm support or something...
