Gunsmith or machinist in sydney/south coast?

Post by Gus408 » 19 Dec 2014, 5:37 pm

Hi fellas,
Scouting around now for someone to thread my .22 barrel for 1/2" x 28.

Just phoned around to gunshops in greater Sydney but none of them seem do any gunsmithing themselves, looks like they are pretty much retailers who farm the work out. One gun store quoted me $295 minimum (then said it would be more because my barrel is stainless steel).

Can anyone please suggest an actual gunsmith or machinist in/around Sydney or south coast NSW.

Not looking for anything fancy, just someone who can thread barrels (and re-crown barrels when needed).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

"The Gunsmiths" at Sefton should be able to do the job but you'll probably be in for a wait. Gun smithing seems to be a dying trade and a good one is hard to find.

Why would you want to thread the muzzle on a .22? Need a brake?

Try rob at RDT in Robertson or matt of OLRP in castle hill

but a mate got quotes for his centerfire and nobody was under $100

As for nachinists, I'd say if you went to a machine shop they would be cautious ex ause of the legal implications if modifying a firearm.

Hi Chronos,
Yep, I just love the aesthetic of a muzzle brake. But seriously, my understanding is that a threaded barrel is perfectly legal? Is there any legal implication for turning a barrel and cutting a thread if it is legal to have a threaded barrel or are you talking general wariness?

I'm seeing a list price in Vic for $80, with cap for a specialist gunsmith (thanks google - searched gunsmith+sydney). Out of interest do you know if there is any legal restriction on me removing the barrel, carefully packing it up and sending it in the post? Not to save $20, the post would cost me less time than driving to Sefton or Castle Hill.

RDT is closest to me and I didn't know of them, I really appreciate the information.

Thanks, Gus

Of course it's perfectly legal to have a threaded muzzle, even to fit a sound moderator if you have the correct paperwork/licence. The only thing I would be careful about is somewhere in some legislation I've read something about modifications to a firearm being carried out by a gunsmith.

Everyone knows a skilled person with reasonable skills could easily screw cut a thread on a muzzle and spin up a cap but I'm sure many machine shops would baulk at the idea. And unless they were licensed you would need to be there the entire time to be in posetion if the firearm

Good luck with it.

I've seen things screwed to the ends of 22's which are called "adjusters" but can't say I know their precise function. I assume they're an aid to acuracy rather than silencers. My PWS Summit 22lr has a threaded barrel and it's a bit of a pita having to check the cap is tight on a regular basis so I don't lose it. I'd love the factory "moderator" for my DTA but I doubt I'd ever be able to get a permit for one. Not sure why there's such a problem with sound moderators, makes perfect sense to protect hearing by using them.

you'd be thinking of barrel tuners. by screwing the tuner in or out you can "tune" the barrel to suit your ammo (can be used on any rifle, rimfire or centerfire)

you can tune the barrel harmonics so that the bullet leaves the barrel with the barrel as the barrel is on the way up, this means that a load of average velocity will shoot to your point of aim while a slower moving bullet will be in the barrel longer, "throwing" it higher, then a faster moving bullet will leave the barrel sooner, shooting it lower. with proper tuning all three bullets will have the same point of impact at a given distance (the distance you have tuned the rifle for)

it's really interesting stuff and one of about 30 things a few blokes talk about that mostly goes over my head

It's legal.

There are plenty of factory threaded rifles and pistols available to buy, same as those without threading.

Thanks to everyone,

Followed the lead from Chronos, already have the rifle in with http://www.rdtproducts.com/services.htm at Robertson, less than $100 for the threading and machining a threaded cap to fit.

The gunsmith in Vic I found is Rolf Hey, they has a price list on their website that lists threading a barrel and providing a cap as $80 list price. See: http://www.acmeengineering.com.au/gunsmithindex.html

Really happy with RDT, has a well appointed workshop and specialised skills/experience.
