Left too much gun oil on rifle after a clean

Post by huccl » 19 Oct 2013, 4:43 pm

Hey,

Newbie seeking some advice on cleaning here.

A few weeks ago I went out for a shoot, all good... Cleaned everything up and into the safe it went until next time.

After getting my rifle out this morning I notice I've got a bit carried away with the gun oil. There was still a bit of a sheen across everything and a just noticeable bit of 'wet' to the touch.

Not dripping off or anything, but just noticeable. Seems I just wiped too much on and misjudged how much would air dry off.

It's been about 4-5 weeks sitting like that. I suppose all is well but just thought I'd check with the pro's on the forum.

Cheers.

Nah, it'll be right.

It might have gathered a bit of dust which you don't want caked on, but other than that...

Give it a light rub down and I'd say you're ready to roll.

Run a dry patch down the barrel, wipe it off, get shooting ;)

Not a worry huccl.

When you say 'wet' I assume you're concerns about rust?

A little extra oil will only serve to prevent that, not worsen it.

This is common practice in areas with climates which aren't so gun friendly.

Humid parts of Queensland, areas near salt water etc.

No worries.

Hey hucci,

I keep a damp oil cloth in a screw top jar, not too wet, and run that over the gun before it goes away.
Unfortunately I have salty skin and after a while I was getting rusty finger prints on the metal work.
Be carefull not to put too much in the barrel, as it will run down through the barrel and onto the woodwork which sometimes leaves a stain.
Some guys stand their rifles up in the safe, barrel down, to alleviate that problem. Synthetic is not a prob.

clean guns are happy guns, happy guns make happy owners. :D

Other than it running onto your stock or recoil pad, nah. Recoil pads the worst as sometimes they can react and the rubber does that melting thing...

Muzzle down in your safe though and NP.

I always put heaps of oil on my guns before they go in the safe. Just before I am off shooting I do the clean before firing stage. It is a good habit to get into particularly for the barrel run a dry patch through a barrel gets all the oil and dust etc out that has been sitting in there. It is also a good idea as you know that the barrel is clear before you fire it. So whilst it is in the safe it can have as much oil on it as I can get on it.

That's my two cents worth and my opinion is worth every cent you pay for it.

Cheers all.

Like I said, it wasn't dripping off the thing in rivers. Just seemed like a bit more than would be ideal.

But no harm done, so happy days.

I usually keep my steel with as much oil on it as you've described. No worries.

Less on the stocks though as not needed, and can stain as mentioned above.

Wipe the barrel with a cotton cloth. Don't worry, it is just normal. By the way, which gun oil do you use for your rifle? I use Rem oil and looking forward to knowing if there is any better oil in the market

I think Bore Tech oils are the forum favourite here?
