What paint for a rifle stock?

Post by Timb0 » 27 Mar 2015, 4:46 pm

I have been busy lately but now I'm doing sweet FA as I have torn some stuff in my shoulder. So I'm thinking about painting one of my H-S Precision stocks in a camo pattern for something to do.
What would be a good durable paint to use that doesn't need baking after painting?

It depends on if its timber or poly. Some paints eat plastics. So if its a poly stock you will need special paints. Just remember the 3Ps
practice
preparation
patience.
And if today is the day you call me home,
oh lord,
may I die in a pile of brass with the smell cordite lingering in the air

Acrylic chips pretty easy so I'd skip that.

If you've got, or know someone with a compressor and spray gun I'd say 2pac (auto body paint).

It's not sold in rattle cans though is the only problem.

No baking, tough paint. Can be mixed to colour of your choice cheaply at any auto place that does paint.

Thanks guys, I think my stock is a fibreglass with some sort of coating.
There was a product that guys in the states were using called Dura Coat. I think it may have been a 2 pack style of paint..
Has anyone used that or knows where to get it ?

Suggest u ask a paint specialist. You need to make a good choice.

You can paint fibreglass, just don't skimp on the preparation.

Get in clean and grease free.
I use about 60grit sand paper and give it a light rub until the surface is dull.
You need a primer, don't just skip straight to paint. Prime and sand the dry primer smooth very lightly with some finer paper.
Then paint.

I don't have anything to quote but I believe there are EPA laws about spraying solvent based paint in residential areas.

I can't remember if it's outright prohibited or if there is a minimum distance from other residences.

You'll need to do you own research (sorry :P ) but something to be aware of potentially.

Even dictating where you can paint now

As long as nothing reaches your neighbours place why should it matter. And that would be covered by damaging someone elses property already anyway.
