Torque settings for Boyd's stock

Post by rsj223 » 27 May 2015, 4:14 pm

I got a Boyds stock cheap and cant find torque settings for them, its going onto one of my Weatherby's and there site only say's...
Screws for wood stocks have a torque specification of 35 inch pounds. Please note, however, that you should tighten the rear screw first and then the front screw.
If yours is a Fibermark or an Accumark stock, the torque specification is 55 inch pounds.

Have never torqued up stocks before and just wondering what you have done with your Boyd's
Oh and was looking at these 2 for torquing them up

Mine is around 50"/lb but it is pillar bedded.

Around 40"/lb should do the trick, i would say. Too tight and you will start compressing the wood and have unreliable tension.

I wont be removing the stock until I shoot it with the standard one first, If I get the one in first link I should be able to work out just how tight the standard one's are.

Was thinking to try pillar bedding, the hardest part would be drilling the holes straight and the right size for a tight fit?

I think 40 foot-pounds is going to be too much :sarcasm:

The below instructions are from Weatherby themselves for a Vanguard (2010).
Check out the link below if you would like to verify the posted instructions.

http://www.weatherby.com/support/owner-s-manuals.html

ASSEMBLY OF WEATHERBY®
VANGUARD® RIFLE
ASSEMBLY OF BARREL AND RECEIVER TO STOCK
1. With the barreled action resting upside down on a horizontal surface such as a workbench or table, place the
stock onto the barreled action, aligning the recoil lug and the trigger guard screw holes.
2. Insert the magazine box, seating it completely against the receiver.
3. Insert the trigger guard assembly with its follower and spring into the stock and hold in place.
4. Insert the trigger guard screws and, with a screw driver of proper size, lightly seat the screws while holding the
rifle in a vertical position with the butt down. Pull down on the barrel to help seat the recoil lug on the
receiver with the mating surface in the stock.
5. Tighten the trigger guard screws to the proper torque and in the proper sequence as follows. Always tighten
the rear screw first to a torque of 35 inch pounds, followed by a torque of 35 inch pounds to the front screw.
For wood and synthetic stocks this is the final torque value that should be used. On composite stocks with
aluminum bedding blocks, apply additional torque to 55 inch pounds to the rear screw followed by 55 inch
pounds to the front screw.
