Rebarrel a single shot

Post by andym79 » 14 Oct 2015, 6:22 pm

Hi guys when a rifle is rebarreled, sometimes depending on the conversion, cartridge guides and bolt faces need to be altered.

In the case of the falling block single shot rifle, say an 1885 or a Ruger 1, apart from a rebarrel does the bolt face need modification, I assume if you were converting from say 223 to 45-70 then some modification would be necessary, is the principle the same as for a Lever or Bolt action that only cartridges with the same rim diameter are achievable with a simple re barrel?

The extractor lever would probably need altering but a flat breech block with a flat face is still gunna be a flat breech block.

Okay so my mind got wandering. What kind of conversions could I do to a 310 BSA Martini cadet?

Cartridges I would like to have are any suitable?
218bee
219zipper
25-35
32-40
35/30-30
40-65

Are these apart from the bee too long or too much for the little cadet? The 40-65 would just be too big in all dimesions would it.
Would most of these be more suited to a Martini 303 conversion?

I guess 218bee 25-20 and 32-20 are the easiest!

I have been considering 303 martini conversion as suitable candidates for that I came up with

30-30
30-40
7.62-54r
32special
38-55
40-70
405w
44-40
44m
444
45lc
450m

of the two the 30-40 or 40-70 being the most suitable based on rim size, thickness and length. The 40-70 would be interesting and close to my desired 40-65!

I reckon in the spirit of the old frame I'd stick to one of the old black powder cartridges...but then I'm a bit biased that way.

357 is probably one of the easiest value for money conversions i've heard of. 32-20 is real close to 310, but there is more choice in 357 ammo. be a bit to grunty for bunnies but. seen quite a few martini 22lr sporters for sale online lately

300 blackout rimed can be done forming your brass from 357 max.
Use a blackout reamer and get your gunsmith to cut the rim with a boring bar.

Benitez
Its a ruger number 1 chambered in 500 Smith & Wesson I am working on at the moment.
I chambered and fitted the barrel yesterday.
Had a long wait (15 weeks) for PTG to supply the reamer.
But finely started the build.

Has that barrel been threaded but not reamed as yet?

Sungazer.
That's correct .
I had just started reaming the chamber at that time .
So the reamer was just in past the end of the mouth of the case.
