Brass stuck in chamber after firing

This is really looking like an extractor issue more and more. Any chance of a pic showing the bolt face up close?

Had another thought during dinner....how clean is the actual chamber? possibly a small jag or sharp edge grabbing the case after being fired....just thinking out loud.

Yeh, did you clean the chamber or just the barrel?

Suggest you have a good look in the chamber with a torch.

I've cleaned both the bore and chamber very thoroughly a couple of nights ago. I'll get a picture of the bolt face when I get home tonight. I'm also starting to think of it as an extractor problem as well.

I've contacted the dealer that I've bought my rifle from and he suggested that I run another brand of ammunition through it to see if it happens again. He's happy to send it back to OSA but if they determine that it's an ammunition problem, it's going to cost me $200 for administration fees.

Here's the close up if the bolt face, I've also cleaned the chamber again, and close up inspection of the chamber reveal clean, shiny surface with no dirt/rust to speak of.

I've email osa about this issue and the call back from them this afternoon was to try another brand of ammunition and see if it happens again.

I can't seem to view your photos, it might be my computer skills but exactly what brand of ammo have you been using, can't find any mention of it? I have a Weatherby Vanguard which is the same rifle and so far have had no issues with Federal, Winchester and Outback ammo ( OSA by another name, made with ADI brass, powder, Sierra projectiles ) it shoots so good I don't know if I will bother reloading for this rifle. Perhaps the dealer and OSA are correct in saying try a different brand of ammo

It ran 180 rounds of ppu flawlessly, then about 40 fiocchi no problems as well. I then ran ppu through it and the problems started

Mmm could be a bad batch of ppu ammo? Perhaps If you still have the boxes check if its all the same batch number

I'm a big fan of OSA ammo since becoming a .223 owner so I would recommend you give that a go before sending the rifle away, have seen this ammo deliver some stunning results from Tikka's, Sako's ( as you would expect ), Remingtons, Howa's at my local range

The PPU was from the same batch, I double check.

I've contacted the dealer that I got my rifle from and the agreed plan was to clean (which I already had) and run some OSA ammunition through it.

I know what you are talking about the osa ammunition, my mate's tikka loves them! Could shoot the nuts off a wallaby at 200m if he had better aim!

How strong is the spring on the extractor? Does it take much effort to move it in or out? Might be a bad spring that's lost its tension after getting warmed up...

The Howa prefers a diet of OSA and Fiocchi ammunition. PPU is a no no!

Are you full length resizing your brass? Because it sounds like your brass has expanded and is jamming up in the chamber. Also a wire coat hanger mite be good for clothes or a car door unlocker but should not be used as part of you're gunsmithing tools.

First of all are you cleaning from the muzzle or the action? Always clean the barrel from the action and out through the muzzle to avoid pushing crap into the chamber and action, Also get a larger brush to clean the chamber as the one for cleaning the barrel will not be any use in the chamber. My guess would be you either have some crap stuck in the chamber or you have a problem with the extractor. How much damage is the extractor doing to the rim of the case when it doesn't extract?

you have to force,,or at least use more force,, to get the bolt home,,,,but only after 300+ rounds,,,,only used a bore snake, so while your bore was cleanish,, your chamber was most likely dirty,,,most rifles today have clearance to accept most if not all store bought ammo ( don't want to get sued) but if you have crud in your chamber the shoulders of your bullet may be getting squeezed as you load and then when you fire it will expand more so that it will be jamming up so that you cant eject. just my 2 cents

Another possibility is a week extractor spring. These are often tiny little things and if it's lost its tension through use or age, the extractor hook wont grip the rim/groove tight enough and with any further resistance (for example, a slightly dirty chamber) the case will be left in the behind as the bolt is worked.
Personal experience of this and still cant find a new extractor spring for my old Tikka M55 .222

Sounds like a rough chamber....or a chamber problem of sorts especially with new factory ammo. Try another brand of ammo and if that fails and the problem still exists I'd be taking it to a gun smith for,review. Either way it's not a biggy, just a pain in the buttocks.
