Installing action in stock bedded for a different action

Post by buster » 06 Nov 2013, 7:43 pm

Recently picked up a second hand howa from a mate.

The action is old and worn, the barrel is shot out, but it has a as-new condition Boyds Thumbhole stock I'd like to salvage.

Only problem is, the stock is bedded to the action that's worn out.

Rather than pitch it, I can pick up a new action and barrel for about $570 and have a brand new Howa rifle out of the deal.

Has anyone re-bedded a stock with a different action? If I can grind out enough of the bedding for there to be a mm or two all the way round, any reason it can't just be bedded again with the new action?

Cheers.

That is going to be some serious grinding, and bedding compound isn't exactly what you'd call soft.

It's fully bedded is it? or just the recoil lugs?

A Dremel solves everything.

Might take you a couple of hours to take back the entire recess, but I reckon you could do it.

Worth it I suppose if the stock's worth at least $200-$300.

Just go easy on the elbow grease I'd say.

The bedding compound will be harder than the stock. If you get carried away and start trying to chisel or snap the bedding out it, you'd probably break the stock.

You're probably right Dale... I basically just hate to not reuse it because it's basically perfect.

Time & frustration might be the clincher though...
