What is that whit stuff on my threaded barrel?

Post by junjun » 06 Apr 2016, 5:35 pm

I have just got my rifle for a week. Shot about 500 rounds. This white stuff comes on every time after i wipe it clean. I can't even unscrew the cap off too. What is it?

I would have thought it might be a anti seize paste?

Looks to be corrosion from the thread protector, I'm guessing it might be aluminium....

well. After i wiped it clean 2 days ago, it comes back today. The rifle is stored in a safe, dry environment. Might take it down to the gun shop and take a look.

Looks like electrolises to me. Two metals dont like each other. What is the cap made of?

I agree it looks like corrosion. Is the cap aluminium? If it is, pull it off, give it a good clean up then hit it with some electrical contact grease. Designed to stop exactly that from happening.

See link below.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion

US Navy Littoral Combat Ship Independence

Serious galvanic corrosion has been reported on the latest US Navy attack littoral combat vessel the USS Independencecaused by steel water jet propulsion systems attached to an aluminium hull. Without electrical isolation between the steel and aluminium, the aluminium hull acts as an anode to the stainless steel, resulting in aggressive galvanic corrosion.[8]

My bet is the cap is made of alluminium.
