A new project

G'Day Fella's,

I have been thinking of building up a lightweight mountain rifle for some time now.
I already have a couple of other ones but want something a bit different from these ones.
So I settled on a Remington Model 7 S/Steel action and barrel chambered for the old 6.5 Remington Magnum.
Please find an image of the M-7 action, Hardy Carbon fiber wrapped barrel blank and Wyatt extended magazine boxes etc.

I'm presently trying to source a Carbon fiber stock (GS Gunstocks or Senator Stocks from NZ) or if not, a HTS stock from the US.
Still wondering about a scope and would like a Leica 2.5-10 x 42 or maybe a 3.5-10x Leupold......

Doh!

Good on you for getting the Wyatt. Back when I owned a short action Remmy, thumbing rounds in through the ejection port was a PITA, in the heat of the moment. Got rid of it for that reason alone. You should have a much happier experience.
Looking forward to hearing how that barrel goes

Nothing better than having control of your own build. In my experience don't sacrifice what you really want for the sake of a little extra waiting time. I know most comprises come from pricing i.e. Leica vs Leupold, I am a convert to high end optics I have updated most of my Leupolds to Swarovski and have suffered zero buyers remorse.

Carbon fibre wrap?

I can't see carbon fibre offering much in the way of strength for a steel rifle barrel.

Less weight if the carbon was just taken off?

Nope, the carbon fibre is both stiffer and transfers heat better than steel

Good snippet from a BBC engineering doco on steel vs carbon fibre here.

Steel vs carbon fibre F1 drive shafts torqued to breaking point.

Just an observation, the Leica Magnus is actually 1.5-10X42 and it's an awesome scope. Was looking at it at the SHOT show in June
