What price range? There are a few different Rem clone custom actions that would be great, like Montana (more a Mod70 clone) and Defiance. Might be out of the budget, though, so good to know what you plan to allocate for the action.

edit: also is the build for hunting? I assume yes, but best not to assume!

I would recommend instead you pick up an action of a P14 or M1917, they're one of the strongest actions of all time, so strong in fact, Roy Weatherby built his magnum cartridges using the P14 as a test bed. There are plenty of threads on the nitro express forums regarding them, as well as custom builds. Take 5 minutes googling and see what you come up with.

Maybe try to find an older Remington 700 then. So many parts for them available. Problem is, you will still be paying bucks for it, though.

Wouldn't any of the commercial mausers be a good bet? cheap enough on used guns and you can still get rings, bases, stocks that are made for them.

I've never built a custom, you'd probably be better off asking your gunsmith, what he uses and has tooling for.

Savage 11x series. N
ot 1x shory.
Any 30-06 can be reamed to rum. If you start with a 300minmag you dont need to ream or replace the bolt head.
Modify or use 375hh size mag box and you're there.

Standard length Actions are long, and are used for all standard length + rounds (30-06 family, Win Mag and H&H family),
... so the mag opening will eat anything you care to feed to it...within reason... ;)

They even made 'large' ring magnums (currently only large ring short mags yuck  ), which would be ideal for a RUM (in fact were chambered in RUM) - but these are scarce, if at all available in Aus...and offer probably more psychological advantage over standard ring when using up to Magnum diameter rounds.

Why sav? theyre the DIY shooters best friend, whip off the barrel nut, the old barrel and screw on a new barrel.
Headspacing is a matter of throwing in the gauge and screwing in the reamed barrel, thats why pretty much every US manufacturer has adopted the Savage barrel nut system...

Its not too difficult to have a rifle with multiple barrels, if you want

Good price, if in good nick, whats the model, 111 might be a package with scope model....
does it have a 'C' for ....clip, I mean detachable magazine :) ,

Centrefeed mag or staggered, where staggered has fixed to action mag surround, centrefeed fixed to stock...

I'm glad you corrected yourself to say magazine, I was scared for a minute there when I heard the word "clip".

So whats the plan of attack?

You know you could keep the 7mm barrel and get a smith (or otherwise competent individual) to send a 7mmRUM reamer down its throat. It only has around 50% increase in case capacity over the rem mag

Just go 7mmRUM, leaves the westerner behind....
You could have 2 barrels, 7mm & 338 RUM( or Edge), swap as needs be  All you need to carry is a wrench and a gauge.

Then go 300 and 375 RUM later...all with only 1 rifle registered with the popo

DON"T DO IT!!! Switch barrels are a complete PITA, I have three and you're always stuck because of the need to sight it in when you swap barrels (despite what some will tell you)

Also there's no need to buy a guage. unless it's a silly barrel nut action the barrels will headspace fine with consistent tensioning. You'll need a torque wrench capable of torque over 100 foot pounds (most 1/2" drive wrenches will do it but it needs to be decent quality) you will need a barrel vice and some kind of action wrench though
