30-30 midget

Post by andym79 » 24 Aug 2016, 12:50 pm

Hi guys, I have been giving further consideration to making a wildcat for my Martini cadet project.

I think the 30 herrett would be a good cartridge, but believe that it would benefit from a longer neck like the 30-30.

Does anyone know if a small 30-30 wildcat has been made with a nice long neck like the 30-30 but shorter say 1.6 instead of 2.039" in length?

PS does anyone have a drawing from the 30 Paxton that they could post here, I can't find one through google?

The 32-20 in terms of case capacity would work!

However I want a non standard chamber, for 170 grain cast bullets .

I am looking to be able to shoot rather large cast bullets at low velocity 1070-1400 fps, whilst still filling the case close to capacity or compressing the load.

If the 32-20 had a longer neck in the chamber it would work!

Could a standard 32-20 chamber be cut and then the neck portion extended with a neck reamer to allow for larger bullets?

The 30 Paxton is almost identical to the 30-357AET, Just don't need expensive dies for the AET
32-20 brass isn't as strong as 357 brass and can be more expensive and harder to find at times. 30-20 is an easy one to do, Just use a .308 barrel and use 32-20 dies with the expander machined down a few thou. Sold mine not long ago

That one is the 30-357Max which uses 357 Maximum cases rather than 357Magnum cases

Case capacity would be barely adequate...
Next issue....rate of twist.
Why 30cal.....?
357 will give you the bullet weight and easily generate the velocities you're chasing. And it's too easy as a conversion.....
Reinventing the wheel might be fun....but nothing you hit will notice the difference.
Keep calm......and hold centre of mass.
