Swapping between stocks regularly a problem?

Post by scrolllock » 16 Nov 2013, 5:21 am

I'm thinking about doing two stocks form rifle.

A Boyds stock is $100 so much cheaper than a second rifle.

If I had 1 heavy bench stock, and 1 lightweight sporter stock, could I regularly swap between them?

Am I going to wear anything out too quickly by doing this as it's not the norm?

Is that Boyds stock from a LGS or imported?
I am considering a Boyds thumb hole for my Remington

You would probably want a torque wrench for your action screws would be the only thing, so you don't do any damage/wear from continually over tightening them accidentally.
See you on the firing line.

Man, sounds like too much of a pain in the ass to me :(

If you can save/afford it, I'd go a lightweight sporter in whatever calibre you need for your hunting.

And a calibre dedicated to target shooting.

I know that's not what you asked, but I reckon you'd be much happier with the pair in the long run.

Yeah I have a torque screwdriver so that won't be a problem.

pillar bedding the action would get around the potential damage. For the cost of $25 for a set of pillars and about $15 for a tube of epoxy to do both stocks the wear issue would be eliminated. Torque wrench of the bolts would still be highly recommended to ensure consistent fitting

Pillars would definitely be a plus if you're going to be doing this regularly.

A torque wrench is great and will stop you immediately going to far and damaging something through over tightening.

Even so, if you're constantly swapping stocks I expect you'll start to wear the stock prematurely.

Wouldn't be "constant" but 7-8 times a year probably. Back and forth...

Pillar bedding each will be the ticket though. Looking to pull the trigger on this idea in the next few weeks.
