Reconditioning a WM Cashmore 12g Pidgeon

Post by Tank » 17 Sep 2016, 11:21 am

G'day all,
I have a 1930's WM Cashmore 12g that was my Great Grandfather's gun. It was used extensively in competition over a lot of years by him and I have put a shed load of shells (both comp and hunting) through it over the 30 odd years it's been in my possession.
It's in need of some sympathetic restoration....Maybe some re-case hardening, rust bluing, bores would benefit from a good polish (better still an overbore) I would love to take some of the choke out of the 32", 'full' and 'fuller' barrels....
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Miall's in Frankston? Or are there better places to send her for an overhaul? I would love to get this quality gun returned close to it's former glory before I pass it down to my son (named after my Great Grandfather) someday.
Your collective help greatly appreciated.

Tank.

Best to go in there and suss them out.... take the shotty with you... there are many gun dealers... few gunsmiths, unfortunately.

Where the pics? Most around here appreciate a nice old shotty

G'Day Fella's,

Tank, I have a customers SxS shotgun in storage, that Miall's rebuilt.
After seeing the work they done on this SxS, I have problems recommending them to people!

These a bloke in Albury (?) named Wright but I'm not sure if he only does Stock Work on shotguns or Metal Work as well.
He has a very good reputation.

Hope that helps

That's disappointing.....
Thanks for the info though.
It's more likely that I'll just get the bores honed, chokes opened, forcing cones relieved and just get the Bakelite tip replaced in the beaver tail.....
Not sure if you can make out the wear in the checkering on the pistol grip....kinda proud he and I did that.
It would be a treat with the action case hardened and a nice antiqued rust blue.
I will see if I can find this chap Wright.
Cheers!

That is one sweet shotgun.

I hope you find the right person to tidy it up. I'm sure that with some homework you'll find just the right place to take it.

Looks pretty good for a well used 80yr old shotty
if it was mine, I'd give it a clean up and leave it at that....doesnt actually look too bad from here.

Thanks Genesis,
It's been well looked after....it works just fine....but it would be nicer to shoot and a more effective tool with the previously mentioned work done.
She originally had a case hardened action....long since worn (most likely polished away by me.... ) there is still some evidence on the underside.
Locks up tight as a drum.
I'm keen to keep shooting it and ensuring it is usable way into the future.
Sunshine Coast Gunsmithing look like an option.....any of you Queenslanders know of them?

Can't beat that aged timber.

Even when nice new timber isn't the same.

Nice old gun. The work you want done can be pretty expensive, depending on sentimental value that is.

Hi Tank,
Sorry for reactivating an old thread. Just wondering how you went with your re furbishing project and if you got the blueing done? Reason I ask is, I recently purchased a post WW Merkel SxS in 12g-(absolutely love the Gun)which had full and extra full chokes. The blueing is a bit worn off and the stock needed some attention as it took a bit of oil due to possible overoiling over the years. I got the chokes opened up by Mialls which costed me about $240and I was quoted $800-1kfor rust blueing. I have been doing a bit of research and have been working on the stock and forearm lately and have got rid of most of the oil via heating with a hair dryer &carding with a bit of acetone and few Coates with Birchwood true oil- looks lot better than before. Have been thinking on doing the rust blueing myself, but feel a bit nervous as don't want to wreck the barrels with pitting.
Please share some info if you've got the blueing done.
Thanks

Hey Gogetem,
Been a while. Other stuff kept getting in the way with this job.....so it remains a ‘yet to do’.
What was the work done by Mialls like?
Sorry to ask 14 months on....
Cheers,
Tank.

You buggers......... My brother in law has an external hammer Greener sitting in the back of his safe. I'm half keen to give it a new home, but the action doesn't lock up tight, there's quite a bit of side to side movement when the action is closed, and someone did a bubba job of reblueing the barrels at some stage in the past. I did a good job of convincing myself I don't need it, but maybe I do.
