Barrel Corrosion

Post by Nicko1982 » 26 Sep 2016, 2:57 pm

Gday All,
I have got my hands on a CZ 527 .223 (gifted) and it has some corrosion evident within the barrel. I have cleaned it numerous times using brass jags and hoppe's no 9 but haven’t been able to completely remove all the corrosion. Any suggestions on how to remove it all completely???

You could try a rust converter perhaps, but I've never tried it inside a barrel.

Isn't there a product called 'bore shine'?
I believe it is a fine abrasive paste...

Edit: JB Bore Paste. Bottom paragraph in link below gives instructions:

Corrosion in the barrel, is like rust in the sub-frame.

Putting a few rounds through it can also help get rid of some of the corrosion , especially in the grooves. Or at least loosen it up a bit.

Patches will not remove corrosion. Only an abrasive like a bronze brush or the JB Bore Paste above by Gwion, will work, IMO. Imaginethat you are trying to remove surface rust from a piece of steel. Use lots of your solvent with the brush, for a lubricant. Remove the rust by patching out every 10 strokes. Quit when you can't see any corrosion. With luck, there won't be any pits but that won't necessarily make it inaccurate. It will just be harder to clean. Give the bore a go with JB after all that and Good Shooting :)

Happened to see this just now, don't know how well it applies to what you have but it might be worth a look at least.

A good scrub with a brass brush, and keep it well oiled in storage to stop it getting worse.

Should still shoot fine :)

I would get a stainless steel brush and give a good soak and scrub.

if it is realy bad you could try plugging the muzzle end with a cork filling the barrel with Edsred (google it ) leave it soak for a week
then brush it out with a stainless brush what I have done in the past was place the cleaning rod in a cordless drill stainless is softer than the steel just do not dwell in any spot for to long 5 min would clean the bore to like new then clean out the eds with solvent of some type slight surface rust will come out easy .

Is a rifle barrel that has ANY pitting .... even the tinest amount, always going to cause heartache, regarding accuracy ?

( my very first centrefire, was a new Sako Vixen .222 Magnum that I went halves with my brother. When we discovered a tiny patch of rust / pitting, midway along the bore, we arseholed it off. )

(( I blamed him ! Lol ))
