Converting a right-hand rifle to left-hand?

Post by beepar » 18 Nov 2013, 9:21 am

Hi guys,

I'm a new shooter here and also a south paw.

As we know most rifles are come in right handed bolt models, some come in left handed but not all...

If you had to have a rifle that was only in right hand, can a smith convert it for you?

I think, no is the right answer.
To change the Action and then have to change the Stock, would cost more than a new left handed rifle.
I've heard of lefties, in the old days, extending the bolt handle up and over the top of the action, but never seen it.
You can buy a left handed stock from Boydes, to suit a right handed rifle.
Rifles like the early Mausers that have a straight bolt handle aren't too bad to use left handed. But scopes make it difficult.

OR,.... stick with a lever action, pump or break action.

You'd be building the action from scratch basically, plus the bolt would have to be changed to lift the other way.

It would be a custom build job, not a convert.

Cost you a fortune... Better to find something else you wanted to shoot if that was the case.

I guess that would work backwards?

e.g. Push the bolt down to open it from the left, then lift it to close it?

Weird

I suspect as much, but if you don't ask you don't know.

Cheers.
