How often do you clean guns in storage

Post by juststarting » 11 Oct 2016, 9:37 am

Reading the other cleaning pussy, I started to wonder about how often, if at all, people clean their guns in prolonged storage.

E.g. something you haven't used for 6 month or a year, do you take it out of the safe and give it a clean, oil, etc? Once a year, never...

Mine never go unused for more than a month or two.

If they were cleaned well and put away I don't know if I'd bother doing them at all again really.

Maybe if it was a year.

Long term storage, really needs lots of heavy duty anticorrosion product.

Winchester once used cosmoline - a heavy grease like product ....
I've bought a 'few' 30 and 40
year old guns, with the factory grease still on!

...... they have NEVER been 'cleaned' / re-oiled !

I haven't managed to get out much at all this winter due to various reasons, and I use a silicon cloth and light oiling, so I've pulled them out about once a month to check and clean them (and as an excuse to fondle them).

I'm hoping to get out again in the next 2-3 weeks.

Rifles I don't shoot often get a quick patch and re-oiling at least once every 6 months where as those I use on a regular basis are put away clean and well oiled. Humidity control has been covered several times and is important when storing firearms for extended periods between uses.
How's my posting?

If it's shaping up like they'll be in the safe a while I give them a thorough clean, top to bottom, and after oiling them I'm I'd be happy leaving them there for months. Not that it happens often.....

Humidity isn't a big issue here though.
