TSE barrels?

Post by andym79 » 29 Jan 2017, 9:57 am

Hi guys, just wondered if anyone had used TSE barrels?

Are they good?

Does anyone know what they charge for a chrome moly profiled, I emailed them 2 weeks ago but no reply!

I have one of Tony's stainless barrels on a 222R - No issues with it at all. More than acceptable accuracy for my needs and cleans up well.
TSE is a small family business - Best to phone and have a chat about your requirements as they are sometimes slow at returning emails.

These guys built me a custom heavy barrel for my 243, exceptional results 30mm, 28inch 1:10, steel, approx 1200 round through it thus far.
I am actually in discussions with these guys only today on a second project, 243 again, different twist, my instructions; built it like no other, they said that's normal lol...

Chrome moly barrels are about $400 as of 2016 when I bought one off them in 6.5 cal as a profiled blank .they shoot well. But I have only bought chrome moly barrels from them and all shot under an inch at 100m. If you want 1/4 inch groups then buy a madco or something like a kreiger, lilja etc and even then you may not get it

I had TSE do me a 30 inch fluted stainless barrel with brake in a heavy tapered profile which I had chambered in .338 edge, superb is all i can say being very accurate and broke in nicely also easy to clean
Another really good one is Allan Swan, from Ipswich QLD, I heard rave reviews about his work.

What sort of prices are we talking - cradle to grave on these barrels?
Whilst it’s no doubt great to have a custom barrel and “your” rifle, I’m trying to weigh up costs vs benefits for potentially walking this path - what are you actually getting for your $$$ compared to factory barrels?
Tikka .260 (Z5 5x25/52)

I have a swan. Cost is 770 for SS and 660 for crmoly. As he generally makes his own barrels and fits them. Maddco barrels are around the 600-650 plus fitment.

From a mob like maddco, swan, kreiger, etc. Etc. Etc. You get a barrel that is not mass produced so the quality should be better, it does depend on the skills of the gunsmith and barrel makers. The barrel can be made to your specifications, including the twist rate, the profile, you can get it cerakoted, you can go so far as to specify the actually projectile you want to run. Also the chamber is tighter.

In short usually you end up with a more accurate gun than most factory made ones. Obviously you can get a dud. And usually a long wait time

About $600 for the barrel and $400 to get your gunsmith to chamber and fit it to your action.

You get a quality barrel, which has higher tolerance machining and hand lapping that factory cheaper rifles cannot afford to spend on their barrels. Your gunsmith then chambers the barrel to suit the projectiles you intend to shoot.
