358w reamer for 356w chamber

Post by andym79 » 04 Mar 2017, 4:33 pm

Hi guys, my smith has a 358w reamer. I want him to rebarrel me a 356w, can the 358w reamer be used to cut a 356w chamber. I figure from drawings the case is the same so yes, but, the throating may be different from one to the other. From what I have seen the 358w looks like it is throated for bigger bullets than the 356w, can anyone confirm or deny this, or better still give me details?

Thanks

The 358 Win is a rimless case and headspaces on the shoulder. The 356 Win is a rimmed case and headspaces on the rim. I don't know how good your "smith" is but he'll have his work cut out trying to make that chamber with the wrong reamer.
They both take the same diameter bullets but they need to be seated deeper in the 356 and be blunt nosed for the lever guns that the cartridge is designed for.

The 358win reamer will ream the 356win chamber perfectly except for the rim.

The rim would need to be reamed separately, possibly by sending 30-30 reamer in either before or after the 358 ream,

Thats may take....

That was my point. Probably didn't make it clear. :unknown:
