Is engraving a rifle barrel safe

Post by mobo » 09 Dec 2013, 10:12 am

Hi,

Can someone tell me, should it be OK to lightly engrave a rifle barrel with a message? It's for a gift.

I know they flute and do whatever else to barrels, but obviously this is designed ahead of time.

If you did this to a lightweight sporter which wasn't intended to have anything taken from the barrel, would that be OK?

Thanks again.

Your best bet would be to give a competent gunsmith a call and talk to them mate but I wouldn't think that very light engraving would cause much of a problem

Yeah, don't take it to the local key cutting/engraving place at your shopping centre.

Guaranteed way to get a ruined rifle back back...

Plus people tend to get a bit excited when you take guns into shopping centers

Overly sensitive IMO.

I'd tread real careful with this.

I'd say you almost want it scratched in rather than 'engraved'. I'm picturing like an 8th of a mm or so.

Not something I'd trust a regular engraver to do on my stuff.

Contact a gunsmith who does fluting and barrel threading. They would be in the best position to tell you how far is too far for engraving.

I suspect very shallow engraving should not pose a problem is it's only a small amount.
See you on the firing line.

Normal engraving no problems.

Just need to find a good engraver.

They will do it to an existing barrel if they think it can take it. Fluting a heavy varmint barrel or similar.

A little engraving shouldn't be a worry.

Thanks everyone.

Going to go ahead with it. Now just to find the person to do it.

This might sound odd but if you can find a jewellery (with a firearms license) they might be the best person to do it for you, someone who does hand engraving (hammer and chisel).

Not the guy at Mister Minit who had one of those vibrating engravers that always cuts wobbly as hell lines.

Find a friend who's a jeweller :P
