Firing pin wear and tear from debris in pin hole

Post by lapp » 19 Dec 2013, 8:11 am

G'day guys,

I was forced yesterday to strip and clean my centrefire rifle bolt yesterday for the first time after a little bit of debris make its way through the firing pin hole.

It was just a small bit of black grit, the usual stuff, but it was obviously enough as the bolt suddenly got noticeably stiffer to cock.

Not heaps, but a noticeable amount.

I'm sure I'm getting ahead of myself and my rifle only has a few hundred rounds through it, but I guess this causes wear on the bolt pin and where ever else.

How long does a firing pin and bolt typically last?

A maintained bolt will easily last you thousands of rounds mate.

You're not likely to ever need to replace one.

You'd shoot out the barrel or wear out the stock or just about everything else before the pin goes.

Not a worry.

Unless you're really punishing it with hot loads that are spitting back bits of primer it's now a worry.

Crap builds up in the bolt slowly over time, just like everywhere else.

A good clean and re-grease every once in a while and you're right as rain.

No, only factory ammo at the moment.

Not up to hand loading just yet :)
