What do you clean the outside of your guns with?

Post by Conallin24 » 23 Oct 2017, 7:49 pm

Hi guys, I always use WD-40 or something like that to clean the outside of my guns. Just a little bit on a clean rag. Then a dry rag to wipe off. Keeps rust away. I found a bottle of O ceder furniture cleaner and thought that maybe I could use that for my stocks and other wood parts. So my question is what do you use for wood and outside metal areas?

really you could use house hold furniture polish or a car paint polish if you wanted for protecting your firearm
I use a horsey saddle product called coachaline to protect my firearms although a rag with a bit of inox is used for a quick wipe down
I do not get any rust when using the coachaline ever, I also use the inox inside the bore to look after it as well

WD-40 is not an oil that leaves a residue. Bit like Rem-Oil. I would never consider putting WD-40 near any of my firearms, my choice only.

"O-Cedar" is a furniture polish that cleans, will leave a very slight residue but not much. Nice to wipe over a timber stock that is either oiled and/or coated with a clear finish.

I wipe my firearms with a cloth that has a slight residue of either / both Tetra Gun Oil / Inox and/or Ballistol all of which are on a soft rag. I wipe the whole firearm, metal and wood. Don't live on the coast and firearms are stored inside with moisture control inside the gun safe.

Inox & Lanox is IMO one of the best allround Protectants for any type of machinery and with firearms for storage a bloody good drowning inside and out is my go,and will not be detrimental to timber or Synthetic stocks.

Innox or mineral oil on metal.
DIY wax or Birchwood Casey wax on wood. Will also work on metal as rust inhibitor.
Dry clean cloth on composite/plastic and wood.

+1. But any light mineral oil would be OK for the metal parts.

I'll use WD-40 or CLP,[ Cleans, Lubricates, Protects ]. I then use a RIG Rag. That of course is on the metal, for the wood, it is furniture polish and or linseed oil.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

WD 40 has probbably killed more fishing reels than saltwater! I wouldnt put it on my gun either.I just wipe with very lightly oiled cloth. You could use a solvent, but is it really needed?

My cerakote painted rifle gets a blast of spray n wipe once in a blue moon ... so much practicality.

The ol Singer Sewing Machine Oil was what I used for many years, never had a problem with rust etc, now I like the smell of the Lanox and G96 so just use those for the most part.

Armorall on a scrap of cotton cloth, no rust and no fingerprints or whatever.

Years back I modified a motorcycle luggage rack with sections of raw carbon steel RHS, whenever I washed the bike I would wipe with Armorall and those bits never showed any rust.

A small pump/squirt bottle will last several lifetimes if the cloth is kept in a ziplock bag.

I use Brunox in a spray can for metal.
I certainly get less surface rust than I did with rem oil.

Only recently got my first wood stocks, one is painted black and the other I hadn't thought about yet.

I use grease when storing rifles, just wipe it off before use. You can use it in the bore as long as you patch it all out before firing. Seen lots of rusty rifles that were stored using very light oils which migrated away over time. If you live near the coast, grease is you friend.

Micro fibre cloth lightly impregnated with rem-oil for external metal. Dehumidifiers in storage safe. Mine get cleaned when used weekly....

G'Day Fella's,

The problem with using products like WD-40, CRC 556 and similar, is that these products evaporate and leave no residue behind to protect the metal surface.

For decades now, I have used only two oil products on all my own and my customers firearms.
That being, "Break Free, CLP" on the mechanical working parts of the firearms (rifles, seedguns and handguns) and the Australian made product "Sweets, Gun Oil" on the external metal surfaces and the inside of the barrel (when being stored).

I have not had any issues with rust by using these products but I don't live on the coast.
That being the case, I personally believe these two products, will give your firearms, the best possible protection.

Another product that gets very good reviews for metal protection, is Hornady brand, 'Shield".

Hope that helps

Doh!
