Old eye's and New options

G'Day Fella's,

One of the down sides of getting older, is that your body ain't like it used to be.
Luckily, there are so many options available to us these days but they pretty well all cost money.

Eye's are one of the most common bodily functions, that diminish with age and it's hard to shoot accurately if you can't see the target.
In this instance, the shooter had to wear prescription glasses to see the front sight of his pistol but wasn't happy with this, so wanted another option.
My solution was to use a Trijicon RMR, Orange Dot sight but no commercial sight bases were available for the Bul-M5 1911 type pistol, rear sight cut out.

The solution was to measure up the rear sight cut out, draw up (on paper, with a pencil) and then machine and hand fit a sight base/mount, to the slide.
Rather than explaining this in words, I'll post some images, as they say "A picture is worth a thousand words".

Here is the end of the shape and profiling machining;

Here is the base/mount in place (along with the sight), after hand fitting the dove tail, and the front recoil contact surface.

After some initial live fire testing, I was happy with the proto-type but decided to reduce the weight by "Jenny Craig-ing/Swiss Cheesing" it a little.

The pistol/sight combo has now been used, in a number of competition stages with good results.

Hope that helps to keep some older shooters "Burning Powder".

Doh!

Yes Homer, it's a pain all right. This cataract thing has kept me out of the back paddock since last winter. Early Jan. I've got to get the left eye Lasered and cataract removed from the right eye. this will keep me out for a few more weeks. At least it's summer and too darn hot to do much up this way.
Very impressive machine work, looks better than a bought one; How did the new sight go?
Boom, Boom! Tikka, Tikka, Boom! Shoot first, video later.
