Gunsmithing Tools

Post by Bushie » 29 Dec 2017, 2:35 pm

Hey guys I'm stepping my foot into the gunsmithibg door just general stuff and I'm seeing a lot of things require (or already you should use) tools for

I was just wondering where you guys get stuff like, bolt disasembaly tools or bench blocks from in AUS as the bloody postage on the stuff from the state's is mental

A lot of stuff is home made see Juststarting post on a level. I just spent the last few days or parts there of making bullet and case comparitors. Better than the bought ones.

I get most of this sort of stuff out of the US either via Ebay or Brownells (US and Au). I've picked up some bits and pieces locally when I've not thought ahead and need it now.

Bench block... Use a plank of wood! FFS lol

Vise grips - plywood cut to your specific size.

Bolt disassembly - I don't think you need tools for those. Most bolts don't need tools, afaik.

Brass punch set - 98%of time you won't need it, most common for drifting iron sights. You don't have iron sights.

Length guage you can diy, but you'd need to tap and drill stuff. So unless you have a drill press and something to cut threads with, you better off buying it from the shop. And cheaper.

Bullet comparitor - you definitely want to buy that, unless you are an experienced Fitter and Turner or something similar (I think so anyway).

But I have a sneaking suspicion that you may be blending gunsmithing tools and reloading tools. I think most people here will order if money permits, it's just a lot easier. And diy as last resort, if you have the necessary tools and materials. If you have to buy tools, then it's probably better to just buy the part.

Most people here have accumulated a bunch of tools and offcuts of random crap in their garages/sheds that make this possible.

Don't preemptively buy things. But it or make it when you hit a wall and there's no other way. Buying these things just in case is a waste of money.

Most useful tools... Screwdrivers, oil, steelwool :) The rest just happens. :) Unless you are after something specific.

Caffeine!

P.S.
I'm like a baby compared to a lot of people here, with dedicated gun rooms, lathes and what not :)

Is that just to grip the bolt shroud to allow you to turn it?

Mate, bolts are disassembled and assembled without any tools. They are designed to be stripped by hand. Also, you do that like once a year if at all. Most people don't do it at ever.

Oh I watched a video and some bloke made it out that you needed to use that tool to pull back the firing pin to be able to twist it..

Guess that guy was a flog

I meant it like that, pomemax. I meant more along the lines of, that the level of precision required to make something like that requires experience.

For brass punches I used to buy brass rod from a toyshop but..............supply is intermittent and never when you want it.
I made a bolt stripper for my CZ455 after giving up on using a fired case on the bench-top. This thing fits into my pencil case with the bolt.
Sometimes you have to buy but I don't own specialist screwdrivers, preferring to grind my own.............but you need a bench grinder.
Over the years you accumulate tools and branch out in to all sorts of things, which, if your ingenuity is working, can be used for all sorts of other things :D In this way, things can be done quickly and for not much money with the scrap left over from long forgotten projects.
And one more thing............never chuck Anything out

That tool for bolt disassembly works fine. Designed for Rem 700 bolt. Try brownells au. It is also called a kleinendorst tool.

People poo-hoo it, but its easy and works so if you want one buy it.

If you’re trying to get items out of the States but find they won’t send to Oz or is fairly expensive try looking at “USA to me”, just google them. I’ve never used them, but a friend has (used for car parts) I don’t know how much they charge but it may be worth an enquiry.

I've got quite a good collection of tools but this is the most recent...
Finally I can set windage properly on some pistols and not have to worry about holding left or right. Tool purchased from my good mate Zhen at Midway Australia and already saved a lot of bad language when swapping a rear sight on a Beretta 92FS :)
