Cloth fragments in barrel after cleaning

Post by batter » 05 Jan 2014, 4:43 pm

G'day,

I do the usual routine when cleaning a rifle... Solvent patch, nylon brush, brass brass then dry patches until one comes out clean. Once it's clean run an oil patch through it.

Maybe repeat a few of the steps if it's real dirty.

I notice that after cleaning I always have fragments of cloth in the barrel. Only single, short threads but still.

Do you guys get the same? Or what do you do to avoid it?

Not sure if I've just got some dud cloth or there is something wrong with my routine.

Any advice appreciated. thanks.

I had the same just because I was half tearing/half cutting the cloth and the frayed edges were getting left behind.

Try cutting the patches cleaner?

FYI they do make pre cut patches.

I have a roll of cloth and use a guillotine to cut my patches.

I bought it for other stuff, but it doubles as a hatch patch cutter. $60 or something from office works I think?

I got it a while ago though, not sure if that's accurate...

I have a roll I cut with pretty decent scissors. Usually it's pretty clean but I've probably been a bit slack with a few cuts and torn the last bit off.

It could well be just me.... I'll have to pay attention to do a cleaner cut next time I'm doing patches.

If you are doing a roll on wrapp patch in .264 or larger, try just tearing the flannel.
The tear should follow the weave of the cloth.

I get 'odd bits' in the .224 bores - mostly due to not cutting the "spear" patch inline with the weave of the flannel.

The "torn up" or ripped roll on/ wrapp for the 6.5 & .303 & larger, do not leave any left overs, that I have seen & I do look!

I've just taken up using a guillotine to cut my patches as well.

Just a regular paper one which was $80 I think. You have to go a little slow and firm for clean cuts on the cloth, but it's much faster and cleaner than cutting with scissors or a blade.

+1 for this from me.

I get a few too, stray cloth fibres...

I just leave em in there with the gun oil and shoot them out.

No problems as far as I can see?

Thanks for the answers all.

Paid closer attention on my latest cut and clean and with a little more care on cutting clean edge patches I'm no longer getting the stray fibres in the barrel.

Just a bit of user error after all.
