Is a wooden handled knife an issue?

Post by Supaduke » 03 Oct 2016, 8:51 pm

Looking to purchase a new hunting knife from the states. It is legal in so far that it's fixed blade with single edge.

The handle/pommel is brass and rosewood. Will a timber handle cause an import issue?

Can't find anything specific after some googling. Seems like it won't be an issue. All examples of legal knives shown however, have synthetic handles and I am just after a second opinion before I drop any cashiola.

Thanks in advance

At worst they will freeze it to kill any nasties.
Should be fine, though. I just bought a folder with a wooden handle that is a US made knife.

Do some searching on customs website but from memory it's porous wood and similar that is the problem, not wood itself.

If it's raw, has cavities or could otherwise carry some undesirable bugs it'll get pulled up. If it's processed, high finish lacquer etc. and it's clear nothing is hiding within then it's fine.

From memory.

The rules I was required to adhere to, regarding some importations about 2- 3 years ago, were something like ...

'MANUFACTURED wooden products' were not a problem, but incurred a $30 inspection fee.

Rules are as per mr winchesters post , if it's manufactured it's generally ok, if it's raw from uncle bobs back yard you could have a issue. A lot of, but not all of our mail is X-rayed on arrival, customs may choose to have quarantine inspect it further, if insects are found Daff should, but may not, contact to ask if you want to destroy, at your cost or treat, at your cost or at 3pm on a Friday just go f it and let it go
But beware dealing with daff can/will lead to heavy drinking

Well tracking says its arrived in Australia. Also says it's been processed through the facility. Guess I will find out in a few days if it turns up on my doorstep. It is a coated handle, some sort of poly I imagine so I'm pretty confident it will make it.

No, although it may have been inspected because it was held in Sydney for 11 days
