Bipod ski feet and bench shooting

Post by mahna » 15 Mar 2014, 7:08 am

I'm looking at getting a bipod with ski feet for the grass.

Can you use these for bench shooting though?

I guess they probably slide all over the place without rubber feet on a hard bench?

F class bipods are designed to slide on on the grass mounds used at NRA ranges, for shooting off the bench the usual practice is to allow the rifle to recoil with the rest staying solidly on the bench (although most hunters use their bipods on the bench which replicates how the rifle will behave in the field)

if I were to use a ski type bipod on the bench i'd throw some old carpet on the concrete bench so that the ski feet slide rearward under recoil

Yep, they'll slide a bit more than hop like you typically get with a hunting bipod with rubber feet.

Not really a bit deal though.. . Is this for your .270? If so that's going to be enough recoil to stop you keeping your scope on paper to see the impact and you'll need to line up again for your next shot.

A bit of carpet or a mate like the guys said would be good just so you're not scratching up the feet if you're shooting off a concrete bench.

Doesn't matter so much for a wood bench I guess...

Still worthwhile for taking a bit of the hop out of shooting hard feet off a hard surface.

Cheers guys.

I was really just looking to try something new and this was going to be mostly for shooting off grass.

I'm going to give it a go.

I'll keep a mat for bench shooting too as suggested. Cheers.
