Digital Scales - Why get ripped off....

Post by petemacsydney » 26 Mar 2014, 9:56 am

Hi all

Thought i would share this with you...
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _200g.html

i've been using this digital scale for quite a while now for other hobbies. it weighs in multiple measurements including grains. i've recently started using it for reloading and again, no problems.

I've seen the exact same scale sold in a shooting supplies online shop for $75!... aarrggghhh, rip off!! makes my blood boil!!.

This baby sells for 10 bucks and you wont have problems with the company.. i've spent a bucket load through them for my drone flying hobby: https://www.youtube.com/user/FPVnAround/videos

i've had one for over a year and she works a treat. very accurate and no malfunctions.

Hell, for 10 bucks, you've got nothing to loose!

Australian shooters get boned on price, no doubt about it.

I recently sold a Ruger Hawkeye which new cost me a bit over $1,000 here.

I was in the states a while ago at a gun shop in Las Vegas and they had the same rifle for $350 or something from memory

Yep, everything is 3 times the price here at least.

Or more with a lot of the cheaper stuff which they can really inflate the price on.

I would most certainly not be using them to weigh powder charges if you are serious about reloading.

They don't mention an accuracy standard and as with most cheap budget type digital scales they are not accurate enough, not consistant enough and slow to react to small increments as with trickling powder.

Might be fine for general weighing, sorting or rough checking.

Even some expensive digital weighing systems, like the Chargemaster, only quote an accuracy of +/- 0.1gr so that means you can have a difference in weight of up to 0.2gr. That's a lot of error in small calibre powder weights.

One test is to say take a 30gr bullet, turn the scales on and see what they read, then weigh the same bullet several times over a period of time and see if it weighs the same. Test with powder in a tray and weight 30gr of powder, let it sit and see if the scales change the indicated weight, add 1 granule of powder at a time and see if the scales react to the addition. Balance beam scales will.

I'll stick with premium quality Balance Beam Scales any day.

There are some very accurate digital scales around but they also come with a very expensive price.

yeah, i hear your concern. there are plenty out there for similar prices that do specify accuracy. ebay is a good place to start.

Price is relative. It'd take you three times as long to save up for it if you were working over there... It's not like the average job pays $30 p/hr. Minimum wages are a little bit different in comparison to australia.

I bought a Lyman powder dispenser and scale set up, best money I ever spent. The $10 scale would be good for sorting bullets. Have you compared it with a beam scale for accuracy?

A ribbon (or whatever) is handy practice for gauging wind in the field too.

Can't always have your wind meter with you.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

Hey guys, changed my mind in these scales. I don't recommend them. They r only 1dp. I think I'll invest in at least 2 dp
