Kg12 copper cleaner - wow!

Those that may have read other threads will know I’ve been having some issues getting copper streaks out of a sauer 100.
I’ve tried bell and chasey, sweets 7.62, hoppes, boretech, various brushes etc.
typically, what has been happening is - I’d soak the copper with wet patches of xxx and wait - then the very next patch would have minuscule blue marks, next patch - clean as a whistle.

Enter kg12...well...after reading about the cyanide content, I was reluctant but curious, so got some gloves.

The kg12 is yellow...I saturated a mop and left in muzzle for 10 mins. I then brushed a nylon brush 10 times and then put a new patch on for the tell tale signs...
Interestingly - first patch...yellow and brown stains but zero blue.
Second patch, clean as a whistle...wtf.
Have a close look - all copper is gone ?!?!?

So, I don’t know by what process the KG12 removes copper, but it does not appear to be the same metallurgical process that other solvents use - unless I’m missing something? Anyone else experienced this?

Yes that is the way it works. I think I put this in another post. I dont do the mop to apply the KG12 because I am a tight arse. I use a loose patch on a brass jag. I will run it back and forth once and then add a little more repeat. it says wait 30 seconds, I wait 10 min. Although it is really about qty of KG12 Vs qty of copper it can only convert so much and that is based on volume. So if it doesn't all come out in the first go remove with dry patch and repeat process. I wash the brass jags under the tap they are unaffected at least to any significant amount. I will sometime also use a brass brush a used one on its way out. Again no noticeable affect of the brush but I think it gets the cleaner into the corners of the rifling.

The reason some copper solvents have a blue colour is that they contain sulphur, the copper is turned into copper sulphate. KG must not contain sulphur and the dissolved copper is colourless, perhaps copper nitrate?

The weird thing is the MSDF sheet says it contains Nitrobenzene Sulphonic acid which should produce copper sulphate?.? Go figure.

Ive got a bottle & dont like it.

It seems to have a strong surface tension & wont soak into the patch, so sits on the patch like a 'bead' of moisture on a fresh polished duco.
So when i push the patch in, most of the solvent falls into the chamber or bore guide, or even falls off the patch before it gets close to the rifle.

Also, i use a copper solvent as an indicator sometimes to see if i do have copper in the bore, & not having any indicator doesnt achieve much on that front.

I’m hearing re the surface tension - one reason I soaked a mop. But even trying sungazers more economic method, I just squeeze the fluid into the patch...

Yeah it sits on the patch a little. either touch it with your finger or the the nozzle and it soaks in quick. From what I have found out about it doing the research it is just a low level of cyniad.

The safety data says not to get it on your skin and to wear eye protection. Don't inhale it either. I think the best way to use it would be to dip a cotton bud it it and wipe it on the copper streak near the muzzle.

I have always used Sweets 7.62 my barrels are Stainless Steel which would make a difference maybe

Very weird SC, I’ve not witnessed a single patch with any blue - so strange. It seems as if it melts the copper as Sungazer has said, and it then runs like water...but only as per the same quantity of kg product you put in...it’s a weird chemical.

Blows my mind - and it shouldn’t - but you can spill a bit on wooden desk, synthetic stock, blued barrel, skin, even rubber latex gloves - it doesn’t seem to leave a mark...there’s not even a warning, caution label on the bottle...

Okay - this is getting weird....are barrels made of the same steel?
The below picture is after a dozen treatments of KG12...it will not seemingly move THIS copper...yet it had it running out of the sauer. I’m really confused now. I’ve tried carbon cleaner in between the kg copper cleaning - to no avail.
I’m going to soak this in sweets for an hour or so and see what happens...in fact I just wet a patch in sweets, ran it through and it came out like the Scottish flag lol.

So weird - maybe this is why, there are so many stories RE different copper cleaners, as it’s an individual thing per barrel, or per layering process...

Hi All. I have been using KG1 for carbon & KG12 for copper on my 2 new Kreiger Barrels for about 2yrs now. KG12 does not contain any ammonia.
Ammonia dissolves the copper which makes the blue stain.
KG12 is yellow in colour and a Brown Colour on the patch indicates copper removed,

Yep - KG12 doesn't produce the copper Cu++ which is the telltale blue colour but the CU+++ which is brown .
I used KG12 with excellent results till i found out it has low levels of cyanide in its recipe - and promptly binned it. Working in the scientific (chemistry) field i should have thought to look at the MSDS for the KG12 - but didn't give it a second thought.

I stick to the Boretech products now as well as Pro-Shot Copper solvent .
If you use the KG12 or and solvent i would recommend wearing gloves as a minimum PPE.

I've used bore tech for more than a decade but recently tried and have changed over to Helmars copper remover, fantastic product and easier to use tha bore tech, aussie made and not expensive.
