150KG safe?

Hi to all,

This topic might have been discussed previously so I'm sorry if i'm repeating a much discussed subject.

To cut a long story short.

I live in NSW. Sydney. I want to buy a rifle. I know that I need to either buy a 150KG safe when empty or must bolt a locked safe to the structure of the house.

My question is which is easier? Moving a 150kg safe in and out the house or Bolting a 40kg safe to the structure?

My second question is: If i were to go with the 150kg safe, what is the best way of moving it into the house, without the help of delivery people (I'm paranoid and do not want anyone to know that i'm acquiring a gun, probably because of all the horror stories i heard of people getting their guns stolen)

My safe (I built my own) weighs 175 kg empty.

I am neither "big" or "extra strong", but I've moved it twice (last time was 1,600 klms) and I managed to get it off the trailer and into the house on my own.

All I used was a heavy duty sack trolley and some brain power.

Once in place, I remove the false floor I built into it, and then stack 1" thick steel plates that are cut to fit neatly into the recess, then put the floor back in.

This way I can add many more kgs to the original weight, which makes life easy if I ever need to move it again.

The way I moved mine in (150kg+) was with 2 mates we flipped it 'end over end' and wheeled it over the step and into the house, before sliding it to the corner it's now bolted into.

I got one of the Spika's and it came in a box with and inch of foam all the way around. Easy to slide it on the cardboard in the house to the right spot before breaking it down and wiggling into the corner for bolting.

Moving it by yourself will be a chore. With your "big dude" brother helping though it should be more like moving a fridge.

You should be fine. I've moved a couple of 150kg with just the two of us, in and out of the back of a 4WD with the seats folded down.

It's not so much that 150kg is incredibly heavy, it's that when it's just you and you're moving something that weight and the size of a big safe around corners and steps and stuff it can be incredibly awkward. Awkward + that weight is where you can come undone doing it solo.

With the two of you, you'll do ok. You'll break a sweat, but it's nothing a beer won't fix

I'm buying a 150+KG fridge trolley to make it easier to move around the house once we are in. I live in a rental and got wooden floors the owner will crucify us if we scratch his s**t.

I will let you all know how I go once it's done. I'm getting the Spika 150KG fire resistant safe.

You'll definitely be right with a trolley.

About the floor, you could always put down a square of cardboard cut to the size of the safe and drop it onto that, then slide it in.

Bought a 153kg Lokaway safe. I love the door mechanism on it. A beauty to be honest. The gun shop at Horsley Park used their forklift to place it on the back of my UTE. I previously bought a Cut to size carpet and a 250+ stair climber trolley. It took me and my brother to unload it off the UTE and onto the floor. The trolley came in handy. GOD THAT THING IS HEAVY though! Insane I tell you.

All installed now. I'm off the to shop for a 7615 OR 7600 in .308 Remington Pump!

Once in place, and the 1" steel plates have been added, it weighs a helluva lot more.

I had to move and install two 150kg Lockaway safes on my own and that was not fun. Later I had to modify them to take heaters.

When I put in my 400kg pistol safe, the local cop wanted it bolted to the building, even though it had to be delivered with a crane. I ended up having a safe installer fix the safe. The four bolts alone were $20 each then.

The biggest fallacy is that firearms in safes must have their bolts removed. There is no mention of this on the NSW Firearms Registry page, they must be transported with the bolts removed. The thing about this law is that shotguns and air rifles and revolvers do not have bolts as such and lever action and semi auto handguns are not mentioned. Yes you can remove the bolts from the last two, but you have to partly disassemble them to do so.

And the law clearly states that if the safe is more than 150 KG you don't need to bolt it to the building.

If i have to bolt it down I would have bough a 60 kg safe and bolted it rather than have to worry about moving a 150 kg + safe.

For your A/B longarms you're correct, if the safe is 150kg + you don't have to bolt it down.

thebear was storing pistols, so he was required to bolt it down regardless of weight.

Personally I like the idea of the 150kg and not having to screw around with bolting it in. How often are you going to move it really? Get a trusted mate or two and you'll move it ok.
