Stix used plastic granules for stiffness and light weight.
When I filled the bag he put me onto I couldn't get the plastic so I used some of the feed barley we give the sheep and the resulting 6kg weight turned out to be advantageous as I only use it shooting from the house or the car anyway.

The heavier the material the better, lead shot works well but it is not allowed if you want to compete. Fine quartz sand is an option, you can buy bags of it from your local hardware store if you don't have a supply at hand.

I lovingly disagree with SCJ re the heavy weight.

As Gaz says, i filled mine with recycled granulated plastic (its what they throw in the hoppers for injection moulding).

Mine is heavy enough for shooting off of without moving, but light enough to use out in the car.

Mine gets thrown over the bonnet & i take 50% of my bunnies & 90% of my foxes with it....

If you fill it with sand you will only use it at the range, & then eventually will probably resort back to a bipod because of the horrendous weight.

Go recycled granulated plasitc...the added bonus is if it gets wet, it dries out & doesnt go mouldy...

I filled an old.sock with fine beach sand, then tied the other old sock around the first. Works very well, cost me an old pair of socks and a trip to the beach.

You are right, I never take a bag out into the field, I use a bipod or shooting sticks or a sling and lean on a tree. For shooting off a bench you want the bag to be heavy.

Walnut media in mine.
I have a pair of bags I filled with dirt as well, but one good soak in the rain and they became hard as rock. I also filled them with .22LR brass for a while but they also tend to hold water. I think plastic beads are the better choice, but I've been wanting to get a big block of high-density foam and see if I can make something that suits me best.

I just use rice but pretty much anything granulated would suffice. Sand, plastic, cereal grains etc etc etc.

Zircon sand is the stuff you'll be looking for.

Sand Blasting grit. Heavy sand can get it from Super Cheap Auto. You want heavy fine media.

Bought mine a looooong time ago, before moving to Aus. From memory, it was that heavy stuff used for grit/sand blasting.

I just use sand from the sandpit across the road in the park, I like my bags with a bit of weight to em as I leave em sitting on the bonnet when driving around the paddocks when spotlighting or whistling.

I see that you're in Qld. There's a reason for using sand, or some other inert material. Which is why the Zircon sand is preferred, because of its higher density. Heavier for the same volume.
But, you do know what moisture (humidity) and split peas, or rice or other pulses do when you cook them. Don't you?
There's usually a bit of expansion involved, and they're inclined to be a bit squishy. Best you make sure that they remain very dry.
