I've got a few hoppes bore snakes, i bought them all from an eBay seller named Lappy1960, pretty sure they are always under $20 from him, definately less then $25.

I tried 2 cheap chinese bore snakes, the 308 snake broke the 1st time i went to use it, and the 22 snake broke after maybe 5 or 10 uses

Pull throughs, i just make them im 5 minutes.

A barrel sinker with strong string and an old bore brush or jag. Or even just a loop in the end with some lightly oiled rag. There only use is to remove dust, dirt from a bore in the bush.

I have the Chinese ones in .22,.308,.357 and 12G, they all work well and look just the same as the real ones that are also made in China. I paid no more than $5 each for them. I can't see how you could cause damage with them.

There's a school of thought that they damage the crown over an extended period of time and 50,000 cleans.

I use three for each of my diff calibre rifles.
One to clean with a quick spritz of cleaning fluid, the other to wipe the fluid and the third to wipe it dry. Evey few months I chuck them in a laundry bag and stick them in the washing machine then in the dryer.

They work a treat.

50 000 cleans !!!
I wouldn't expect 50 000 shots from a rifle let alone needing to cleaning one 50 000 times with a snake.

If my calculations are correct, at once a week that would take me 961 years...

I threw that number up there because it sounds ridiculous as much as soft nylon from a bore snake wearing down a muzzle crown.

Yet the science is clear that the friction of a bore snake will abrade your muzzle.

I use them, my rifles still clover leaf at 100m, and I fire A LOT of rounds. and call me ignorant but a cloth bore snake with a tiny bit of copper brushing in it vs a copper bullet through a chromium steel bore.... how can pulling a bore-snake through a bore possibly be more abrasive than the combination of heat, fire, friction and metal from firing a round?

When you pull the cord out of the muzzle it is impossible to pull it out exactly parallel with the bore axis every time. This friction on the crown wears it away and effects accuracy.

The same thing wears away the chamber when you use a cleaning rod which is why people use a bore guide.

Not a single one of you blokes thus far have mentioned using bore snakes in a .17

I have found that is the only way I can clean mine.
Mind you, I don't use it all that often.
When I bought the rifle, (CZ 453 .17 HMR) I also bought a quality one piece cleaning rod, brushes and mops.

Unfortunately they were tighter than a virgin and I could never get em through, and the last time I tried, the rod itself gave up.
Hence the use of the snake.

Any one else had the same difficulty ?
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!

I wonder if anyone has empirical data on how many cleaning strokes it would require to wear the crown at the point of affecting its accuracy.
Is it in the same realm as firing 40,000 rounds ?

As a rule, keep the snakes clean with a regular wash or ultrasonic cleaner, pull straight out and you shouldn't have an issue. If you're paranoid you could make a plastic sleeve to insert into the muzzle crown when you're pulling the snake through, but I dont think it warrants it.

ok i am going to setup an experiment, I will polish a piece of steel equivalent to gunmetal, then I will rig my power hacksaw with a boresnake and set it to seesaw across it. I will take measurements with a micrometer, I will work out how many strokes per minute it does, then I will let it run for approximately 2000 strokes, IF there is any difference in the thickness of the material I will concede that after using a boresnake 2000 times a gun MAY be affected. using a cleaning rod that has metal parts is a different scenario, I will also do the same experiment with some thick copper wire, run it for 2000 cycles or until it breaks whatever comes first... can almost guarantee the copper will be exponentially more detrimental...
