Over crowding was getting to be a nuisance so I built myself a new safe. It’s built to fit long BP rifles and measures 1600 x 600 x 450 and was determined mostly by the lump of plate I had. It’s lined with carpet.
The whole thing is made of 4 mm plate and weighs a meaty 183 kg. Just the door is 45 kg and has 14 locking pins. The mechanism is firm but smooth to operate in spite of the 28 friction points.
There’s 11 in it atm and looks not at all crowded. I reckon if I dream up a rack I could hang another 10 from the top.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Very nice, although I want to build one that lets me store them horizontally.
You couldn't put the hinges inside the safe?

The outside hinges contribute nothing to the doors locked upness lol. They're only there to hold the door up while its open and when locked you could cut them off and the recessed door isnt going anywhere with 14 locking pins behind a 16 mm square door jam.

Yes, I can see that, but it still "looks" like a weak point I think. I suppose after somebody spends ten minutes cutting the hinges off and finds they still can't get in maybe they'll give up :-)

Very nice Noisy. I may have to get your plan on the door locking system. I have been thinking of making a safe. The door is the hardest part.

The first one for my son was a bit time consuming. This one took less than half the time even though there are two more sets of locking bars and linkages. Give me a yell you're ready.

I know exactly how you feel Noisy,, once you've nutted out the process, adding the extra pins/shafts is so tempting, and a piece of p!ss really.

Job well done Mate.

For your next one try plug welding two sheets (whatever thickness you desire) together to form a laminated sheet.
It makes cutting a hole with oxy dammmmm hard for any would be thief.

I want to do one with horizontal storage, 1800mm wide, 1800mm tall, and 400mm deep but the double doors are the difficult bit for me.
I have a five-rifle safe mounted on the wall horizontally which is magic for putting in the couple of rifles I'm using at the time. The door opens downward to form a shelf. I'd like to have side-swinging doors but I'm leaning toward simply mounting three twenty-rifle safes horizontally on top of each other.

would get you a fine or your guns confiscated here in WA with those external hinges. dont believe me ask all the old blokes and farmers in the states southwest copping fines after inspections of their 40 year old safes with their 80 year old guns inside.

Wouldn't doubt it Flutch. Eastern states will accept WA shooters as political refugees these days lol.

better idea, lets all petition the government to donate the Herd and McDonald islands to the lefty socialists of Australia so they can all go live out their Bolshevik Utopian dreams there. then we can simply forget all the stupid bureaucracy and anyone that shares their views can be given FREE fare to goto the islands and join their new world order.

Thats another crazy example of not understanding how things work. You wont find to many bank type safes without hinges on the outside.

The whole safe thing is a good idea gone crazy. Initially it was just to keep them out of the hands of small children. Now they want them $$ safe next will be fire safe.
