Safe options

Post by Robin » 25 May 2020, 9:27 pm

I'm looking for a safe and have been looking at Lokaway High Security Pinned DIGITAL .

Are these safes ok or am I better off going for the Bunnings safes.

I know somebody who bought a digital safe and something went wrong so he had to pay me to break into it to retrieve contents .....and then he had to buy another safe .I’m a bit old fashioned. I like a key

Seconded on that. Most safe salesmen will tell you digital locks are more secure and are easier to operate. While that's true that digital locks are easier to operate. Personally, I don't believe that digital locks are more secure than a dial or key lock, maybe they are on par in terms of security though.
I also know someone whose digital lock on their safe failed (supposedly the circuit board inside shorted) and everything got locked in. They had to pay a few hundred dollars to get a locksmith to drill the safe to replace the lock and ended up with a hole in the safe.
Key and dial locks in general are just more reliable.

Also don't buy a Bunnings safe, they are super easy to break into. Only use if you don't care about losing your guns to theft or have an absolute theft-proof house, that thing is more a metal filing cabinet than a safe.

+1 keys best also, I have a lockaway 12 gun safe. Got 7 in it and very full. Hope to squeeze 1 more in next week, but that will be it. Full as a goog. All the manufacturers lie about capacity.

Apart from the digital they seem a lot better than Bunnings ones.

Always get a bigger size because when they say it fits 12 it really fits about 6-8.

I’ve got a dual lock safe - a key is needed and a pin no.
The digital key pad has a safety device built in to prevent a screw up / device failure...that is, the pad is removable with a back up 2nd key access...so I hide that back up key seperate.

I’m still trying to confirm this but a friend has been knocked back at a recent inspection apparently because of A keypad only safe...he had to rush to Bunnings (inspection was on Sunday) to comply...there’s nothing in act/local rules to say keypad only isn’t allowed so might be more to this.

Unfortunately, new CMI gun safes are no longer made in Australia. Still good quality though, I decided to get the 14 gun CMI safe a couple days ago - seems like it can actually fit around 14 guns.

I don't consider the safe is going to stop anybody from stealing my firearms, it's more to keep them secure from random idiots than thieves. Spend the extra money on alarms and cameras if you want to prevent theft.

At the same internal size, other safe makers claim theirs can fit 20+.
If I can cram 10 in there I'm a happy man.

A shame CMI don't produce gun safes locally anymore though, maybe this whole COVID and China crap will bring them back to manufacturing locally.

I got a 20 gun safe, key and number pad together to open, with a 2nd key in case the pad battery dies. I’ve got 11 firearms in there and it’s standing room only, they must work out capacity using small unscoped .22’s.

The difficulty for manufacturers is to state an actual capacity of "five scoped rifles" just doesn't sound as good as a "20 rifle safe". They need to just list internal dimensions.

The standard for a firearms safe is a unscoped 410 single barrel shot GUN that,s why they say a 10 GUN safe not 10 Rifle safe
