Cigar dehumidifier in gun safe

Post by paps » 27 Mar 2014, 5:40 pm

Long story short I've picked up a cigar dehumidifier, but don't smoke...

It's quite a big box. It would hold 50 cigars or something.

I figure I can stick the lid and gadget in the gun safe to keep things in good nick.

It should work, right?

Mmmm, I'm thinking a safe is going to be a lot more capacity than a little humidifier is really designed to handle?

Are you sure it is a dehumidifier?

Cigars are stored in humidifiers that keep around 68% humidity levels, they will cause rust IMO.

i have had quite a few cigar dehumidifier's and cigar humidor's before. in my humble and inexperienced (guns, not cigars!) opinion, i don't believe it will serve sufficient enough value for a gun safe.

i do however recommend that you buy a good case of Cohiba cigars and get your funk on with those instead!

gotta love a good cohiba!

ps, i agree with Baronvonrort, a humidor is supposed to keep cigars a very slight degree moist (very little though), as this helps with aging and condition of the leaf. humidors are not designed to keep them 100% dry, as this degrades the flavor.

My thoughts too and wiki confirms

"The ideal humidity in a humidor is around 68-72% of relative humidity.[4] Though it can go higher or lower depending on the cigar smoker's preferences, it should never go higher than 75%[citation needed] due to the possibility of hatching tobacco beetles. The more empty space, the more readily the humidity level of the box will drop or rise."

Might be time to take up smoking cigars. Lol

An ordinary 7w night light will do the job in the close confines of a safe - keeping it just a few degrees warmer than outside.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

I'm not a cigar aficionado so don't really know anything about these things. All I know is it says "dehumidifier" on it.

I guess it's just a poorly labelled box. I was under the impression it kept them dry but obviously that's not the case as everyone has explained above.

No worries. Will cross that one off the list.

Just thrown half a dozen silicon beads in the safe.

Put a few on the floor at some up high if there is a shelf.

That'll do the job.

What Kater said.

That's all I do and haven't had a problem for years.

Every time I get a box or buy something that has the beads in there I just chuck the pack in the safe.

If there are a few too many just chuck out the oldest ones. It's not like they get in the way though...
