Scalpel-style knifes - Havalon Piranta

Post by Seconds » 15 Apr 2014, 9:08 pm

Looking for a new fold up knife for field work, skinning, dinner... Anyone used something like the Havalon Piranta in the recent SSAA magazine?

Basically a standard foldable knife but with removal scalpel blades... Just pop in a fresh one and you're razor sharp.

Interesting idea anyway. Anyone?

I see the Havalon Piranta's are about $80-$90 on ebay.

I do have a scalpel in my kit, but it's just a regular old scalpel by surgical supplier Swann Morton.

$7 for the scalpel handle and 10c per blade from my local art supply place.

Not knocking the Piranta, but it can't be any better than surgical grade stuff, and it's 10+ times the price, so...

I have one, cost me less than $50

It's sharp, that's a given. But to be honest the blade is too small to be effective on any butchering task bigger than rabbits or possibly game birds

It would be great for fine caping work or the like but despite its claims it's not the tool for breaking down a deer or pig IMHO

I should add I have a scalpel in my kit as well as a full size fixed blade...

The scalpel definitely isn't enough knife for everything.

Can't say I see the need for a scalpel sharp blade for hunting/camping?

More fiddly than functional it seems to me?

A modest fixed blade or folding knife with a sharp edge will do all that needs doing.

That had occurred to me, hence the question.

I'd cast my vote for a good fixed blade too.

Never really liked folding knives as you miss out of that bit of leverage if you need it.

A few knife suggestions here by the way.

A good knife.
