Ample tools for the job ?

Post by Die Judicii » 29 Nov 2021, 12:17 pm

As the picture shows,,,,,, I have a pretty reasonable collection of drivers for all manner of screw/bolt heads.
Including a complete kit of "Tamper Proof" drivers.
But even still I was sorely tested this morning.

Ever increasingly manufacturers are producing their very "own" screw/bolt heads that only their factory tools will fit.

This morning I worked my way through each and every one of these drivers and not a single one fitted well enough to be able to undo
what I had to get apart. Frustrating,,,,, :x

I resorted to actually making a driver that fitted and worked,,,, and case hardened it to allow me to get the job done.

Those bits leave my modest collection for dead. But what kind of skills do you need to do what you did?

Just use an angle grinder

Seriously, and then use self tapping TEK screws. Worse case scenario cable ties and duct tape.

Heh,,,, And I spose you'd do it with finesse . (a bit like peering into an open drum of petrol, with a lit cigarette in your mouth)
There are places where angle grinders just do not fit and should just never be.

I was thinking similar-grind off head if you can, or drill it out and replace. Obviously not always possible, as it seems in this case

What were you pulling apart?

If access is available, a welder is handy too sometimes. I have welded screws and bolts onto dodgy fasteners, and once removed, deposited them in the bin!

In those situations duct tape and cable ties.

Or the biggest hammer, lol

Yeah Mate thats what we called in the trade "Welding Out"

Unfortunately not this time due to ignition likelihood.
