The Great DIY Thread!!

Post by von_klitzing » 16 Apr 2014, 1:15 pm

I love To DIY, avoiding paying top dollar of something I can laboriously build myself :) - although sometimes it doesn't work out so cheap lol.

So, thanks to some other users great ideas, I've made a thread specifically for all DIY projects! Add your ideas, instructions and results for us all to look at in awe (or for a chuckle :P ).

Remember: Pics or it didn't happen!

Here's my brass and S/S tumbling media separator. I used a truck intake filter, cut away the outer mesh and paper and voila!

New project to further the DIY crusade!

I've been using the powder horn (made by the original owner of my CVA smoke pole that came as part of the package deal) for a fair while and thought it time I made my own personalised version.

Here's the progress so far but still with a lot of scrimshaw to do yet and the strap to make as well. The brass is not very period correct but I like it!

Been trimming lots of .223 lately and I set my hand lathe up on an old piece of wood. The brass trimmings were going everywhere so I decided to give the wood router a workout, soaked it in linseed oil to get some life back in to the wood, and voila - a little bed for my hand lathe :)

Son of Noisy is getting in on the DIY bandwagon too with his 12g BP reloading station complete with period correct reloading tools that his grand dad gave him for his 17th birthday. He designed, cut and machined the base board himself.

Look at that, it looks great! I love the way wood can just be formed to make just about anything fit all nice and tidy. I can't wait to one day make a huge reloading bench and have each reloading process machined out in the wood to keep all the bits in just the right spot. A man can dream eh?!

Hey, Ariat, that's really cool and great to see recycling at it's best but did he get into hot water for using it?

I think Mrs Noisy is pretty cool with his 'reclaiming' things from the house

In fact I think at the moment it's the opposite, he's having to keep her away from his black powder rifles

I'm a big fan of making stuff myself, so I thought I'd put up some pics of the gun stand/vice/workstation I built a few years back out of some scrap plywood. I originally made this as an exercise to practice using some drafting software and to have a try at some woodwork - after all, you can't say you've successfully designed something until you've made a prototype! The upside is I have a full set of pdf drawings free on my dropbox if anyone else wants to have a crack making one: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nsxfc8uqqbr4y ... 0Stand.pdf

Some of the features:
a clamp to hold the butt so the rifle doesn't move
a recessed tray to hold general tools and parts
holes for jags and brushes of different calibres
cutouts to locate my magnetic parts tray, a couple of spray cans and my solvent jar
rubber feet to stop the whole thing sliding around when using a cleaning rod

Pics:

The clamp setup open and closed.

A couple of points if you actually want to make one:
the bottom and side strips i made from 3mm ply not 19mm.
if I was going to do it again, I wouldn't make the recess go all the way to the edge to give the 3mm ply something stronger to attach to
I had to add a block of wood to help locate the butt to help stop it sliding out the back.

PS: Yeah I know this thread is ages old, but I love making stuff and getting new ideas for projects. Also sorry for the potato quality pics, the cameras in phones in 2016 weren't very good.

Great thread dig, it's always good to bump awesome threads like this back to the surface.

I like your stand, especially the cam lever that locks the stock in place, a simple but ingenious design

Cheers, it was inspired by a similar design by on from an american company (MTM I think?) but I didn't want to pay the 'aussie tax' for a cheapy plastic one.
