Is leaving a layer of G96 Gun Treatment harmful?

Post by jwai86 » 17 Mar 2022, 12:40 pm

During my last club meet, I applied and wiped down my CZ 75B with G96 Gun Treatment as the pistol hadn't been lubricated after its previous cleaning and there were some very minor rust spots on the exterior. However, I left a thin layer of G96 on the slide and frame before storing it in the safe because the indoor range was about to close for the night, and I didn't get around to wiping it off with a fresh dry cloth. I won't get to access the pistol again until next week, so I'm concerned that leaving it all greasy might lead to problems.

No, none at all. In fact it would do the opposite and reduce the possibility of skin induced rust. I always wipe my firearms with a lightly mineral oiled (de-natured Baby Oil) cloth before storage whether for a week, month or longer. Wipe off before next use, Cheers.

I have exclusively used g96 for inside and outside protection for over 10 years. Great stuff, just be careful around soft recoil pads in my experience.

Nope. It’s great stuff. The solvent evaporates and the oil remains,

This is a classic. There is a lot of hype out there about gun oil. Most lubricating oils will do the job, from sowing machine to engine oil, even ATF.

G96 is one of my favourites.
You can literally soak everything in it, allow it to drip dry and wipe off the surface.
It eventually dries out to a perfect lubricating oil.
Run a few dry patches through before use and you're done
And that heavenly smell

My only (minor) gripe so far is that the tube and nozzle on the G96 spray can aren't so good for fine application. I have to press the nozzle quite hard, and then too much G96 comes out. Spraying the G96 onto a cloth and wiping it on might be a better idea.

This is just an anecdote, but I know a prominent gunsmith recommends G96 as the week-to-week lubricant/shield for workhorse firearms. He uses Inox when he wants the lubricant to penetrate and "stick" for longer term, but it's not quite as appropriate as G96 for frequent shooting. I find Inox a bit heavy for frequent lubrication.
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

They all lubricate, and protect against rust.

How did you carry the test?

Or is it just a subjective opinion?

Should be hunky dory, As the others above have said it can be used on 90% of surfaces on the gun and you can't really have too much per se. Just keep it away from really soft rubbers and patch it out before you shoot the firearm the next time.

Smells pretty good too.

Personally, I've found that lard makes a good lubricant for the sheepskin condoms that I prefer

The only product I've used for quite some years now is "Inox"
And I quite like the smell of that.
Maybe not heavenly,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but just pleasant.

Any container holding oil of any kind, just suddenly gets more expensive the moment the word "gun" appears on the can/label.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
