Less noxious alternatives to Butch's Bore Shine?

Post by jwai86 » 24 Mar 2022, 4:44 pm

At this week's club meet, I was given a large 16 oz (473ml) bottle of Butch's Bore Shine which is a bore solvent that the club uses. I appreciate the generosity, but I'm not keen on the stuff because it gives off fumes that smell bad and give me headaches after a while. Are there any decent alternatives that won't stink out my unit while using it? :P

It must be pretty savage stuff to stink the house out.
Is it an ammonia based copper solvent?.

Google says that it contains ammonia.

Try using in a well ventilated area. But if its giving you headaches you may be sensitive to it.
I use Sweets for copper, it stinks to.
Use SCA carby cleaner for carbon

That would explain the eye popping, nose bleeding, migraune inducing odor.

Have you considered inviting yourself over to the neighbours house and leaving the stench there?

Another unorthodox option would be to dilute a small batch in a separate container. It will still work well but will take longer to do its job. You could try it at 50% strength and work your way up in strength until you find the sweet spot that doesn't blow your nostrils to high heaven.
Every copper solvent I have is ammonia based, it's only the strength that varies.

Another option could be to set yourself up in the laundry or bathroom, that way you could contain the fumes by closing the door and possibly exhaust them with a ceiling fan.

Butch's Bore Shine is the one I use for general purpose cleaning. To go specifically after copper I use KG12 it doesnt have the odor at all or contain any ammonia.

Will not work. Need a door or window open for the fan to extract

Do people actually close their laundry and bathroom windows? I've never done that

Funny thing is everybody goes on about cleaning products if you have a system and you can knock off a rabbit size Target at over 1200 yards why would you bother rooting around with something else

I exclusively use the "Breakthrough" brand of cleaning products. This includes their carbon solvent, copper solvent and "All In One" CLP. These products are ammonia free, biodegradable, petroleum free and virtually odourless. I have used the G96 aerosol CLP spray on occasions but the "Breakthrough" gear is my go to.

It's actually a cocktail of petroleum based solvents with some ammonia.

I never use copper cleaner on any handgun as I only shoot coated hardcast (Black Widow, HRBC etc) but even when I loaded Berrys and other copper clad I only ever used Eds Red and never had copper fouling to an extent where accuracy or velocity were affected. Throw the stinky stuff in your "to be traded" box and use Hoppes No9, smells lovely, or make up some Eds but without the ammonia. Don't need the lanolin in it either, Cheers.

I'm not opposed to giving my bottle of Butch's Bore Shine to somebody in the Sydney area, but I don't know where would be the best place to advertise it.
