Carrying ideas

Post by bluerob » 25 Apr 2014, 8:54 am

Hello and best wishes to all.

I've had multiple spinal surgeries (more steel inside of me now than you'd have in your gun safes) and I really struggle to carry my gear.

I no longer go hunting and shooting is now totally restricted to the range. I must say that some people offer to help, but, I hate relying on others and I like to manage on my own, up until I can't, if that ever happens - I'm looking at further surgery with the prospect of ending up in a wheel chair one day (please don't think I'm looking for sympathy, just explaining myself). I can walk, albeit not like I used to.

So that I can continue to have a shot without being in agony, I need to carry a large safe case that can carry six handguns, a safe case for ammo and the usual crap, and the ability to carry a rifle.

I have the mechanical mind of a flea. I've thought about building something on a removalists type trolley or modifying a golf buggy that has suspension (I can't play golf anymore so maybe I could use this).

My biggest concern with this contraption is that I don't want to draw attention to myself. I do that with hot loads..... :D

I'd really appreciate any "DIY mechanical, construction and engineering gurus" that I know exist in the wonderful world of firearms. Any suggestions and where I could possibly get it built. I live in Sydney, but spend a lot time on the Central Coast, so anyone on the Central Coast that could build something? I don't like to impose on people that I know as they will refuse to accept payment and I prefer to pay.

Best wishes to all!

Rob.

This isn't really a DIY solution, but I'll post anyway, hope you can get some ideas...

When I go to the range I take my rifles in hard lockable cases x 2 because my car doesn't have a separate lockable boot. I also take a small/mid size tool box for spotter scope, tools, chrony, targets etc and a small cash box for my bolts. Then I a have an ammo box, which is well, a military ammo box. Also a bench rest, and some towels.

If I were to need to drag all that around from a wheelchair, I'd be looking at something like a bicycle trailer like this:

Just modify it to have a jockey wheel, steering handle and brakes maybe? Or even have a quick release attachment to the rear of the wheelchair...?

Good luck. HTH.

I dunno what they're called exactly, but have you had a look at the 6 weeks movers trolleys that let you lift it up stairs?

In stead of just 1 wheel on each side it has like a triangle of three. So it rolls along on the bottom two wheels on each side, then you can use the triangle setup to climb up stairs?

Know what I mean? That must be easier that a regular trolley for you?

I've used these at work before for getting heavy boxes around and they do a lot of the work for you. Way better than a normal trolley.

Those three wheel trolleys really are good.

I used to do tree lopping and would have to trolley out several sections of tree trunk at a time, often up gutters or peoples steps etc. etc.

I reckon you can do about 40% more weight or something with those climbing wheels than you can with a crappy two-wheel one.

Get a few straps, strap your boxes on there and good to go?

Many thanks for the replies.

I might have a go with a three wheel trolley and some boxes.

Thanks again.

I really appreciate the advice and comments.

Don't know that I would live down towing a little wagon behind me. I don't shoot western action.....

Cheers.
