Securely storing keys to a gun safe?

Post by jwai86 » 18 Jan 2023, 11:52 am

My recently installed gun safe came with two pairs of keys. It didn't take long to realise that I need a means of securely storing the keys that is acceptable to NSW Police when they inspect my safe.

I thought I could attach a pair to my set of house keys that are rarely far from my person, but quickly ditched the idea after seeing that the safe keys are significantly long and bulky. It's also likely that wouldn't pass muster for security either.

What are your chosen solutions?

Keep the keys in a safe. Keep the keys to the safe holding the keys to the gun safe in another safe.

Repeat........

Unless the key is in the lock when the inspection occurs, I'm struggling to see how this could present any form of problem for you. It's not like the copper starts searching your house looking for the key.

To apply for a PTA for a handgun, the police must inspect my Category H safe first. I don't know what to expect regarding the keys, that's all.

Make a cavity in an old book and stack the books. Somewhere. Boring books that no burglar would be interstate in.

If an officer arrives at your house to conduct an inspection, make them wait at the door while you get the keys. Inform that you are going to get the keys, and in the interest of maintaining your personal security, they should not be present.

Yes stay away from the exciting books like the LOTR or game of thrones; they are indeed a hot commodity underground... I used to store mine sandwiched in my penthouse black label collection, but soon realized that's exactly where the crooks would settle during their smoko break.

I don't think there is any legislation anywhere,,,,,,,, that says you should or must tell any "copper" where you hide your keys.

I think I recall reading ( Qld legislation ?) that the keys should not be hidden in the same room as the safe/s.

Indicating that anywhere else in the house or shed would be acceptable.

I use a second digital safe to store the gun safe keys.
Its hidden , bolted to the wall and floor and only I know the combination.
If. I was being inspected at a mutually agreed time, I would have the keys on me before the cops arrived.

Not sure what safe you have, but my ammo compartment key is an acceptable size that fits in my pocket with the rest of my keys.
My safe has a combination pad, so I just forget about my safe key and throw it somewhere safe.

End of the day you just need to satisfy the requirement that they are not readily available or nearby.

If you've got a keypad just keep the keys in another safe if you have one for valuables or in the safe itself and make sure to set a reminder to change the batteries in your calendar.

My keys stay with me at all times, my spares are kept in an eclipse tin with a magnet well away from the safe.

Even if your keys are hanging up or in a bowl with your wallet on a table while your home, its still constructive possession of your keys while your home.

Might be different if you have a SO or Kids that aren't licensed, in that case I'd suggest keeping them locked away while your home elsewhere. Just use some common sense.

I hid my keys so well I can't find them.
That was ok until the keypad on a safe died. Hmm

I have a few safes, I put the small bypass key for my pistol safe and a few smaller ones in a small key lock-box. The long ones I leave inside my pistol safe hanging on an adhesive type hook. Pistol safe is electronic combination type.

Yep, combination locks. Sick of losing any key. Mind I did forget the combination to one gun safe, now that's a key in a key safe with a combination lock. I know there's a lesson there somewhere
