Shooting X sticks/stix

Post by Oldbloke » 26 Jan 2024, 3:32 pm

I wanted to replace some fibreglass shooting X sticks I made a few years ago but lighter if possible.
I had 3 old carbon fibre arrows I could use.

First I cut
2 x 32 cm centre sticks
2 x 29 cm top sticks
2 x 28 cm bottom sticks with point.
4 x 6cm ally tube for joiners.
2 x 1.5 cm plastic tube. This will act as a stopper for the knot on the elastic.
2 x 95 cm long pieces of elastic. Tie a largish knot on one end.
2 x small washers. (Optional)

First araldite the ally tube joiners onto the 4 shorter sticks about half way.

Glue the plastic tube inside the 2 bottom sticks. (28cm)Push them up about 3cm to allow room for the knotted elastic and the arrow points to be glued inside.

Ensure there is no build up of araldite where you don't want inside. If so clear it out before it fully sets. A bit of fencing wire does an OK job.

Now once the araldite is more or less set using some 20lb fishing tie it to the elastic so you can feed the elastic through the 3 sticks leaving the knot jamed up against the plastic tube inside.

Put all 3 sticks to gether and thread through washer tieing off the elastic with some tension. Idea being they stay together when in use, but can be easily folded.

You could just fold the elastic over and tape it instead.

Now you can glue the points in place

Add some leather or soft tube on the top end of the two sticks.

Now tie this knot:

Alternatively you can use cable ties, castration rings or other knots, but I like the purser knot.

End weight 100grams, I saved 102 grams.

A few pics to help.

Hey OB

Looks really good, got a pic of it put together? I really like that idea, might have to have a crack myself - got plenty of arras floating around.

Sweet, thanks!

That's longer than I was thinking, good for hillside work.
