Action Cleaning Tool - What do you recommend?

Post by jastreb » 16 Jul 2014, 10:10 am

As the subject says, what do you guys use to clean your actions? I been looking at the two below

Sinclair
http://www.sinclairintl.com/gun-cleanin ... 35492.aspx

Boretech
https://www.boretech.com/products/actio ... gkit.shtml

The Boretech one seems to be out of stock. Boretech are apparently re-designing it and it won't be available till the end of the year so I am leaning towards the Sinclair. Its available from Hinterland though (the old version)

Can you guys suggest something else I could use? Maybe a DIY option?

Cheers

I always use a bit of metho on a tooth brush (not the one you are currently using) followed by a some sweets oil on a rag. Not too much oil. Even a bit of WD40 from time to time after the metho. Brake clean with hydrocarbons work a treat if its a real mess. Get a bit of oil back in the metal afterwards to ward off rust. Once its all clean, dry everything right off and hit it with a bit of Graphite powder as a dry lubricant. It won't build up or attract the dust like oils and grease do. Not too much just a puff.

I use the sinclair one and haven't had any issues with it. Does the job well

I don't use a dedicated tool but I have a brush from a tetra cleaning kit I can use to clean the bolt slide ways in the action plus a round nylon brush from a $2 store. What I normally do is after I have cleaned the bore I put a bit of powder solvent on the round brush and give the chamber a quick scrub. Then after 5 mins or so I give the chamber another scrub then wash the brush. Then I wrap the brush in a strip of flannel or chux cloth and clean the chamber with shellite or metho. A quick wipe inside the action and around the bolt with shellite, grease the locking lugs, a few drops of light oil on the bolt (I use protecta oil because its polymer doesn't attract too much dust)

I don't do this every time I clean the barrel just when I do a "big" clean

Would a non chlorinated brake cleaner do instead of metho or shellite?

Also no idea what a powder solvent or graphite powder is. I will do some searching.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Cheers

Sorry should have said carbon remover rather than powder solvent. Just use it to prevent a ring of carbon building up where the case ands short of the rifling starting

I like to do it by nearly breaking my pinky off each time from wiggling patch cloth around in there like my finger was a cleaning rod.

Hahaha..! I tried that. My pinky just isn't long enough. But that's what all the girls tell me.

That's the one thing that s**ts me about my Tikka's bridged action after moving to it from the open-top Ruger. Pain in the ass to clean.

Could just about get inside the Ruger action to clean it.

I'm using a small head toothbrush too. Could probably do with investing in something better though...

Kids size toothbrush.

Fits through the bridged action fine.

I extend the handle of the toothbrush with a bit of tube and heat and bend the head of the toothbrush to suit the purpose. Then I can work the toothbrush from the back of the action instead of going through the port.

I find a nylon brush is gentler on my gums...
