Installing and bedding new boyds stock on Howa .223

Post by Wilso1994 » 25 Jul 2014, 10:14 pm

Just installed my new stock on the howa .223 Boyd's nutmeg.

Barrel returns to centre after a bit of flexing.

Will bedding be required for fox shooting tomorrow?

I've never bedded any of mine and they all shoot fine, plenty of foxes would tell ya that if they could! I normally open up the barrel channel (I use a socket wrapped with sandpaper of the appropriate size - when finished I give the barrel channel a coat of clear to seal it again.

Fair, everything is very tight fitting so I doubt it will need anything with the action tha barrel sits a bit to one side but the gap is even all the way to the action. The foxes will be very sorry tomorrow lol my cousin and his recently fixed savage 17 hornet (he had to weld the bolt handle back on lol) will be heading out for a daytime walkabout and a bit of a whistle. I whistle he shoots lol cause he can't use it properly :P will post pics in this thread :)

Yeah all of mine wanted to sit to the left when I dropped them in the stock (which is normal from what I've seen) , hence I open the channel right up and its never an issue again.

Don't over tighten the front action screw either, that seems to kill the accuracy for some reason, I just do mine up finger tight and leave it at that.

Have you had the trigger worked by Glen Coughlan (Ebay Trigger Guy) yet? if not get it done, best $60 you will ever spend on your rifle. Just Google Ebay Trigger Guy and you should see plenty of comments about his work.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing some pics of the action.

Righto I'll grab the gun and losses the bolts and re tighten them now thanks for that mate. I'm going to put a Nikon 3-9x50 on it, top it off with a Timney trigger set to 1 pound. By the time I get these I'll be putting a new barrel on it haha

No worries mate, don't waist your money on the Timney, just send it to the Ebay Guy and he will make it better anyway, If you need his email or phone No. send me a PM and will get it for you.

I have the Nikon 3-9x50 Prostaff on my Howa 204 and its a very nice scope to use, compares well to the more expensive stuff.

For fox hunting it'll be fine as is.

Might be great as is and not need bedding at all. Guess you'll find out tomorrow :)

If you still want to bed it after go for it. I wouldn't risk rushing it then being forced to use it when the bedding compound was potentially still curing.

Yeah, curing it the day before is cutting it too close for me.

The bedding compounds I know all need 16-24 hours for a functional cure. And longer would be better.

Don't do it today and risk wrecking it tomorrow IMO.

Good to hear mate, so what do you think of the Stock? Get the Ebay Trigger Guy to sort the trigger and she will be a real nice shooter then.
