Mounting a GoPro on rifle for shooting vids? Recoil damage?

Post by steyroy » 23 Sep 2013, 7:52 pm

Just sharing an idea which peak my curiosity...

Thinking about mounting a GoPro on the front of a rifle for some shooting vids... Fitting to a picatinny with some sort of side mount I guess.

I know they've got a reputation as being sturdy cameras, but thinking the shock of rifle recoil isn't something they have in mind when building these things...

Hoping one can hold up to some abuse from lightweight .223 Rem bucking against it when I'm out and about.

What do you reckon?

I'd think it would stand up to the recoil of a .223.

.223 is more of 'push' than a jarring shock...

Search youtube? Obviously tonnes of shooting videos on there... Lots of people leave comments about what their movies were filmed on - should be some feedback on GoPro in there?

Aren't they marketed as "shock proof"?

I'd think that dropping it on a hard surface is was more damaging that the recoil of a .223?

Check what constitutes "shock" in a brochure or where ever... If you can drop the thing without breaking it .223 rem should be fine.
See you on the firing line.

Yep, I reckon YouTube's your first port of call.

Pretty sure I've seen vids of people doing exactly this.

Wouldn't stick my GoPro on a .700 Nitro Express or anything ;) But I'd be surprised if .223 was too much for it.

They seem to survive motorcyclists, parachutists and wingsuitists slamming into the ground or cliffs etc so why not?

A mate of mine has his clamped to the handlebars of his mountain bike which he hammers across rough terrain.

A rifle couldn't be harder on it than half the s**t he's ridden through I would say.

Used mine plenty of times on my underover 12 gauge. Just finding way to mount it that won't change the camera angle when shot is the main dilemma

Half a roll of duct tape seems to be the most popular method
