LED Lenser torches - Tell me about them

Post by Ken » 30 Sep 2014, 2:03 pm

I need a new torch and am looking at the LED Lenser ones.

I've had a look in the shop and they seem decent enough, but trying a torch out in the daylight is pretty limited.

Looking for something in the middle size range. Not a pencil/pocket size and not a club of a torch.

I tried finding info on their website but it's dog slow at the moment and I'm getting nowhere.

Thanks in advance.

I have a single AAA Led Lenser P2 that I have had now for four years as my EDC torch, still working well. I have a larger L7 that has not had much work, still has initial set of batteries. Came with a bracket to fix to the rifle scope. I have used it once in the field but nil foxes seen so no real world use as a rifle torch as yet.

I had a P7 that I loved but managed to lose so I upgraded to the P7.2. I can't see much difference between them although the 7.2 is meant to be a fair bit brighter.

In my opinion they're great torches. Lightweight, easy on batteries, focusable beam comes in handy and they're very well built

i've got a couple (a P7 and a P5) but they seem to stay at home most of the time. their tech is pretty old now and they are far from cutting edge

my $23 head lamp puts out more light, has a better flood/zoom lens and is rechargable in the car between walks

google candlepowerforums and read a few threads, you'll find half a dozen better torches there then you can search for a retail outlet here

I bought a p7 when they first came out $160 with mount to clamp to rifle or shotgun, have since bought several other brands mostly via eBay with rechargeable batteries and chargers, well less than half the price and on par if not brighter, just got an 1800 lumen 5 Cree led torch, can spotlight with it easily out to 150+ metres comfortably, cost me $55 including delivery, not taking anything away from led lenser they are great torches but there pricing is a little off the market compared to what else is out there

I have the P7.2 and its very functional. I love the adjustable head for throw and flood. I also have a more expensive Eagletac and the led lender is kind of close in quality, considering the price difference.

Brain fart here, I can't remember which model I have

I think it's M14 but I'll double check.

Anyway, great torch. Long range, bright, comes with a full and half strength mode to save battery when you don't need full strength.

Other stuff too like alternating, automatic SOS repeating pattern, defence strobe.

If I remember right it's the P series torches are longer but narrower which I didn't like as much. Only hold 2 AA batteries too? The M series is shorter but thicker handle, being a bit thicker than the normal maglight size. I just liked the feel/size better but it also holds 4 batteries for longer battery life.

Bit of a subjective test here too but compared to some of the smaller units which quoted more lumens, the M14 looked brighter to me. (This is just holding them side by side in store). The wider reflector seems to do the job better.

Great torch though, small, bright, and tough.

The best advice given on this page http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/forum.php

They have a recommend me a light sub forum, there are far better torches available for less money than a Led Lenser.

Led Lenser is overrated and over priced.

Ok the old noodle hasn't failed me yet.

M14 is the one I have - That's my recommendation after looking at them all and buying myself.

Just out of interest mate, can you ask the guy at your shop how much the P7.2 is? I wanna know if I got a bargain or not

Also, which model did you settle on?

Very well made torches, tough aluminum housing, o ring seals both ends, and great light output.

My favorite handheld led lenser is the p14 and the h14 headlamp is tops for hands free action, like shot gunning at night with a laser on the barrels.

The smaller led lensers with aaa batteries just dont hold power for long enough for my liking.

What do you want to use the torch for?

I've used a P7 and M14. Standard AAA and AA batteries. Both are ok for wandering around but the white light makes you go a bit blind at night.

Dereelight/OSTS NightMaster RED is a bit easier on the eyes. But the head gets hot, and it's a bit long with the extender for two 18650 batteries.

Just general purpose.

Torch around the house. Doubles for camping.

Nothing too demanding.

A lot of people around me think it is an addiction

They are right!

I love my Led Lenser P14, it is a bit old hat now, but when I got it couple of years ago I was amazed by it. Still has brilliant throw for it's modest output and better variable zoom than the ebay cheapies.

Got a Led Lenser H7R for christmas and use it a lot. Very very handy head torch, USB charging is convenient and I like the fully variable dimming.
Does need regular charging as it goes flat fairly quick.

I still use my old mini maglite a bit, it now has a 200 lumen led upgrade which has made it into a handy little torch to carry around in my pocket.

Strobe effect to disorient and deter an attacker.

Also to draw attention in the dark if you're lost.

Yeah, fancy talk for saying it flashes rapidly to screw up a would be assailants night-vision for just long enough that you can leg it to safety.

You'd have to search for more info (unless someone here knows enough about it to chime in?) but there is also supposed to be something about low frequency flickering light that upsets your eyes/brain and creates a disorientating effect like vertigo.

Mine flashes at 20hz so I guess that's the sweet spot? I don't really know much about it other than what I've just written though.

Regardless of the vertigo effect or not, I tried it on myself in the back yard a few nights ago and it's real bastard on the eyes alone

"catch of the day" had a massive sale on LED Lensers earlier this year, they were like 70% - 80% off most of the range. I'm pretty sure I got 6 LED lenser torches for around $160. I rate them, they are well made and really impress my mates when I shine them on s**t. Also my boy loves it when we spotlight at night and find all the spideys and possums lol. However - I would not pay full price for these to save my life. I really don't think they're worth the retail price. I agree with some of the other posts that you'll find better torches for the same money. But, if you do get one/some - make sure you show it off on here eh? We all love a bit of light porn....
