What the Fox Hat

Post by bigfellascott » 01 Oct 2014, 3:38 pm

Well I've had a fox skin sitting around for around a year now and figured I might as well doing something with it, so I had a crack at making a Fox Hat out of it for the Daughter. She seems happy enough with it and I'm sure if I make the another one it will hopefully be a little bit better.

Anyway here it is.

Thats not a bad job, especially for a first go mate. You gotta break these out when she's older, maybe at her wedding :)

Ripper job! Now make one for yourself and you'll have just the excuse you need to go buy a muzzle loader!

Thanks fella's - she's good enough for a first go, next one will hopefully have a bit more too it (only had the one fox and a small one at that) so was limited as to what I could do with it.

Chronos good point re the chemicals, I'll make up some sort of felt lining for it I reckon, would just finish it off I reckon.

Cheers Fella's

Is that a tinge of RED hair I see, to go with the RED fox ?

Now what I wanna see,,,,,,,,,,,,, is a pic of you wearing it in a gun shop on a Saturday morning.

How about it Scott ??????

Just the Leders mate, seems to do the job fine.

I did a roo skin years ago and I didn't even tan that one, just salted it, let it dry out and then just broke it and its been fine (about 30yrs old) and never any issues with it.

I ended up making a rifle sling out of it - bloody would have to be the most comfortable sling I own too. perfect for the little Brno Mod 2.

When you by fake fox fur you allow a dangerous predator to fight another day. Please support the environment and get a real fox fur hat today.

Good marketing campaign or what?

$5 isn't terribly motivational.

If they could just cut down the requirements for pelts when turning them in to save time that would push it across the line for more people I think.

At the moment you need the pelt from the nose to the tail and everything in between to show you had the whole animal. Hard to do quickly without a lot of practice.

Why not just the tail which takes 1 second and no mess, how else do they think we're getting fox tails if not off shot foxes?

I'd be a bit careful where you wear that Fox skin hat 'cause there is a well know Conservationist that has a hat made from a feral cat skin. I wouldn't like you two to meet in a china shop, all hell could break loose!

I thought that for foxes, all that had to be taken was the scalp, as per the Vic. web site -

4.1 Foxes

Eligible applicants must submit an 'entire' fox scalp including both ears, the skin surrounding both eyes and the nose.

And that's still a fiddly bit of work too.

Cheers,

I stand corrected.

TBH I hadn't looked for ages. At one point or was scalp to tail but I couldn't say how long ago.

As you say, still overly fiddling though.

Yep just tail or ear should be good enough. I dont bother handing in the scalps because in additon to taking the trouble to scalp tne fox you need to take a day off work to hand them in fot the cash. The gov needs to have more drop off points and times. Bit of a joke at the moment, as I only get about 3 or 4 opportunities a year. BTW its $10 for a fox last time I looked.
